The Tokyo 2020 Olympic Marathon Swimming Qualifying event will take place in Setubal, Portugal this Saturday and Sunday. This is the second and final open water Olympic qualification opportunity. The meet was originally scheduled to take place in Japan, but it was relocated to Portugal, where it was held in 2012 and 2016.
A total of 50 athletes, 25 per gender, will contest the men and women’s 10-kilometer race in the Sado River.
20 athletes (10 men and 10 women) have already secured their Olympic spot at the 2019 FINA World Championships in Korea. There are 15 Olympic spots left to qualify for at this event.
Each country can only qualify one athlete per gender at this event, but regardless of that rule, many of the participating countries have entered the maximum amount of swimmers (2 men and 2 women.) 50 athletes will compete this weekend in Portugal, 25 per gender.
Some participants on the men’s side include 2012 gold medalist Oussama Mellouli of Tunisia, Brazil’s Allan do Carmo and Diogo Villarinho, and Evgenij Pop Acev of Macedonia.
2016 Olympian Anna Olasz of Hungary, Portugal’s Angelia Andre, and Samantha Arevalo of Ecuador highlight the women’s side.
