2021 Canadian Trials: 2nd Seed Kayla Sanchez Scratches 100 Backstroke Final

2021 CANADIAN OLYMPIC SWIMMING TRIALS

Kayla Sanchez swam the second-fastest time during the women’s 100 backstroke prelims on day 1 of the 2021 Canadian Olympic Trials. Sanchez hit a 59.78 in the heats which was second only to Kylie Masse‘s leading 58.13.

Sanchez was 1 of three swimmers under the FINA A cut in the event along with Masse and third place Ingrid Wilm who swam a 59.88. The swim for Sanchez was a slight improvement upon her PB in the event of 59.82 which she swam at the 2019 World Championships Trials.

Having scratched the 100 backstroke final, Sanchez’s remaining races for the 2021 Olympic Trials include the 50, 100, and 200 freestyles. Sanchez is regarded as more of a freestyler than a backstroke, having won bronze in the 100 free at the 2017 World Junior Championships, as well as contributing to Canada’s 4×100 and 4×200 freestyle bronze medal finishes at the 2019 World Championships.

In her absence, Wilm will move up to the #2 position, Mary-Sophie Harvey will take 3rd and Taylor Ruck will be in 4th. During the heats, Harvey was a 1:00.39, and Ruck was a 1:00.49. Harvey was a bit faster than her entry time of 1:00.64 while Ruck was well over her 58.55 PB from 2019.

Since Kylie Masse has already qualified for the team in the event, the rest of the heat will be gunning for the #2 spot and a sub-FINA A swim in order to solidify their spot on the team.
