J.M. He finaled at US Trials last year, safe to say he’s capable of long course speed. Training for a 200fly short course doesn’t guarantee it, but would think there is some transferance/a good chance his LC 100fly will be fast. 50s a crapshoot with Any number of 50 guys who will try their hand at it.

I am truly interested to see what he can do at trials on 50 and 100 butterfly …even though he didn’t really train for Long course races . He is gifted for butterfly . Very good videos and comments guys . Very interesting topic

Don’t think it’s fair to compare the underwater kick on a suited 50 fly to a 200fly kick/strategy. Shields was 21.7 on his first 50 of the 100, 19.6 on the 1st 50 in the 400 medley relay, 19.7 on the 200med finals. Even at .7 that’s 20.3 flat start. Pretty sure those are equally proficient to your example…

Shields’ underwaters are great, but for even better underwaters see video below; Matt Jaukovic’ world record on 50 SCM.

Crazy simple and easy looking. You watch Tom Shields and start to wonder what the big deal is to go 1:39 in 200 fly. His whole race was just as a matter of fact elementary looking. Then you realize…
