With the completion of wave II of the US Olympic Trials meet, the US Olympic Swimming Team for Tokyo is now finalized.
The team consists of 26 women and 23 men, led by names such as Katie Ledecky, Caeleb Dressel, Michael Andrew, Chase Kalisz, and Lilly King.
The team also consists of 11 teenagers, with the youngest being 15-year-old Katie Grimes out of the Sandpipers of Nevada. Although there was nobody that young on the team in 2016, Elizabeth Beisel and Katie Ledecky both made their first Olympics at that age, in 2008 and 2012, respectively. The 2012 team featured 5 teenagers, while the 2012 team had 7. Grimes’ teammate Bella Sims is the second-youngest swimmer on the team at only 16-years-old.
Teenagers on the 2021 US Olympic Swim Team:
- Katie Grimes (15)
- Bella Sims (16)
- Claire Curzan (16)
- Lydia Jacoby (17)
- Torri Huske (18)
- Phoebe Bacon (18)
- Emma Weyant (19)
- Regan Smith (19)
- Kate Douglass (19)
- Alex Walsh (19, will turn 20 during the Olympic Games)
- Jake Mitchell (19)
One major absence in the roster comes in the form of Olympic gold medalist Ryan Held, who finished 6th overall in the 100m freestyle. Although this would typically qualify him for the team via a relay only position, USA swimming hit the maximum number of relay only swimmers that they can bring. Therefore, based off of world ranking, Held became the odd-man out, leaving him off of the team.
- You can read an explanation of the rule here.
Katie Ledecky leads the women’s side with 4 individual events plus the 4×200 freestyle relay on her schedule for Tokyo. Ledecky also swam the 4×100 freestyle relay in Rio, so she may be on deck for that event. On the men’s side, Caeleb Dressel and Michael Andrew are each slated to swim 3 individual events. Both men will most likely make their way on to the men’s 4×100 medley relay and the mixed 4×100 medley relay, while Dressel is also in line for the men’s 4×100 freestyle relay. It is possible that Dressel may also compete in the 4×200 freestyle relay as he swam a personal best during the event’s prelims.

Its not Patrick’s fault that Held swam so slow, happy for Pat
Curious how many on the Olympic team were NOT receiving financial support from US Swimming. Anybody know?
The B team…
I can understand mentioning Ledecky being 15 in her first Olympic appearance since she’s on the team again. But why mention Beisel who was also 15? How can anyone forget Amanda Beard being just 14 in her first games?!
The focus is on currently active swimmers?
I’d be curious of the Olympic roster breakdown by swimwear sponsor. Simone’s addition in the 50 looks to give Tyr the edge on the Women’s side… Any gambles that paid off?
Can the coaches put Manuel on relays?
Yeeees
several missing in the photo
I predict a lot of Team USA kicking butt and taking names!
