Jhennifer Conceição raced her way to a new Brazilian record in the women’s 100 breaststroke at the 2021 Settecolli Trophy with a 1:07.13. The swim was an improvement upon her own mark of 1:07.35 which she recently swam at the 2021 Brazilian Olympic Selection Trials in April 2021.

Split Comparison:

2021 Settecolli 2021 Brazilian Trials
50 31.29 31.44
100 1:07.13 (35.84) 1:07.35 (35.91)

The swim doesn’t quite get her within the top 25 ranked athletes worldwide this season. The women’s 100 breaststroke has gotten noticeably faster over the past few seasons globally. We can view this trend by looking at the improvement not only of the top time in the world across 3 different seasons but also but the improvement in the 10th fastest and 25th fastest times.

Top Time 10th Fastest Time 25th Fastest Time
2017-2018 1:04.98 (Yuliya Efimova) 1:06.41 (Bethany Galat) 1:07.36 (Daria Chikunova/Mona McSharry)
2018-2019 1:04.93 (Lilly King) 1:06.67 (Jessica Vall) 1:07.09 (Kanako Watanabe)
2020-2021 1:04.72 (Lilly King) 1:06.00 (Benedetta Pilato) 1:06.73 (Ida Hulkko)

We will likely see even more improvement across the field by the end of 2020-2021 considering that the world’s fastest meet; the Olympic Games, have yet to occur.

The steady improvement and increased depth in the women’s 100 breast has also shown in the FINA A standard which currently sits at a 1:07.07. The FINA A standard represents the auto-qualification cut for the Olympic Games for many countries including Brazil meaning that even though Conceição’s 1:07.13 is within 0.06 of the FINA A, she has not automatically qualified to race the event individually for Brazil at Tokyo 2020.

The federation reserves the right to name someone to race an event individually without them having hit the FINA A cut as long as they have swum the FINA B cut (in the case a 1:09.08) and no one else in the country has hit the FINA A in the qualification period.

While we will need to wait for a final update as to whether or not Conceição will swim the individual 100 breaststroke in Tokyo, this was likely her last shot at cracking the FINA A as one of the last high-level swim meets worldwide before the Games.

She was initially named to Brazil’s Olympic roster, but that was as a member of the women’s 400 medley relay. That relay is not one of the 4 best teams vying for “wildcard” slots, though could be pulled into the meet if other countries decline their spots.

Conceição is joined in Italy for the 2021 Settecolli Trophy by nearly the entire Brazillian Olympic roster to date meaning that if she was named to the team she would easily be able to travel to Tokyo with the other athletes.
