Serbia’s Milica Opacic to Become a Nebraska Cornhusker in the Fall of 2021

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Initially a member of the class of 2020, Milica Opacic‘s arrival in the NCAA was delayed a year after the Covid-19 pandemic made travel between the two countries difficult. Now, Opacic will make the trip to the United States from Novi Sad, Serbia as part of the University of Nebraska’s class of 2021.

Pablo Morales, who serves as Nebraska’s head coach, had to say of the addition of Opacic to the team’s incoming freshman class:

“Milica’s signing enhances an already outstanding recruiting class that we will be welcoming this fall, while further extending the global reach of our recruiting efforts. Milica is undoubtedly a high-level student-athlete to begin with, but to emerge from the pandemic with career-best results shows her high character and passion for her sport, which makes her a great fit for Nebraska.”

Opacic is one of Serbia’s top youth athletes, having won multiple medals at the 2020 Serbian Long Course Junior Championships. She left that meet with a trio of silver medals, having taken second in the 50 fly (27.81), 100 fly (1:01.19), and 100 free (58.08). In 2018, she represented her country at the European Junior Championships, with her top finish being 21st in the 200 fly with a time of 2:19.70.

Top LCM Times (with SCY conversions)

  • 50 free – 26.91 (23.52)
  • 100 free – 57.82 (50.64)
  • 50 fly – 27.45 (24.09)
  • 100 fly – 1:00.82 (53.53)
  • 200 fly – 2:19.70 (2:03.33)

Opacic will be a big pickup for the Cornhuskers in both the sprint free and fly events. With her converted time in the 100 fly, she would have scored in the B-final of the Big-10 Championships. Her time of 53.53 would have been good for an NCAA B-cut in the event and would have been Nebraska’s faster performer last season by over half of a second.

In addition to her scoring impact at the conference level, Opacic will also have the potential to make her mark on the Cornhusker record books in her first season. Her converted times in both the 50 free and 100 fly are both already faster than the program’s records, while her 100 free would rank as the team’s second-fastest ever.

Joining Opacic in Nebraska’s freshman class of 2021 will be Emily Haimes, Maia Hall, Madison Lloyd, Ilaria Murzilli, Sydney McCracken, Beatriz Padron, and Jojo Randby.

Neither her converted 50 free time nor 100 fly time are under the program records, and her 100 free wouldn’t be in the top 10 all time. Nothing to take away from her as a recruit, but the article is inaccurate.

Doesn’t JoJo Randby have a 23.0 as well? I can’t imagine a 23.5 converted would be near program record. I’ve seen some other huskers go under that 100 freestyle as well! I agree this article is not accurate!
