After a blazing fast prelims session, we were anticipating some lightning times in finals… but two particular races stole the show. First, in the boys 100 breast, three different swimmers were under the old public and independent national records. Future USC Trojan Steven Stumph of Campolindo came out on top, touching in an absurd 53.39. Senior Charlie Wiser (future Stanford Cardinal) of Miramonte and junior Nick Silverthorn of Granada were second and third, respectively, finishing in 53.57 and 53.61. All three were under the old overall/Independent (Patrick Fowler, 53.66) and Public (Brendan Hansen, 53.67) records. Here is a comparison of the three swimmers:
Stumph: 25.21-28.18 (53.39) – New Public High School National Record
Wiser: 25.64-27.93 (53.57)
Silverthorn: 25.26-28.35 (53.61)
Notably, since all three attend public high schools, Fowler’s 53.66 will still stand as the Independent High School National Record.
In the final women’s race of the meet, Carondelet, led by National Team member Chelsea Chenault, smashed the high school national record in the 400 free relay. The quartet of Chenault, Natalie Amberg, Madelyn Murphy, and Madison White touched in 3:20.41, easily clearing the overall/Independent national record of 3:21.20 set by JSerra High School just one week ago. The splits:
Chenault, Sr: 23.78-49.27
Amberg, Jr: 24.60-51.19
Murphy, Fr: 23.75-49.82
White, Sr: 24.22-50.14
Stay tuned for full coverage of NCS finals, coming later today.
The PAC 12 gets richer again nabbing the top 2 breaststrokers in the country! Next recrutiing season I’ll bet that Silverthorn will also go PAC 12.
Is it too late to switch sports
What a phenomenal 100 breast Race! Seliskar stil has them beat though…
More crazy fast swimming! What a crazy good last 6 months it has been. Congrats to all of these folks. Keep it rolling!
Stumph faster than Cordes as a senior….
Umm, yeah, he’s faster than anyone as a senior 🙂
Haha, I doubt Stumph will have as big a drop as Cordes did during his freshman year.
I would agree, the time drop that Cordes had was incredible, you can never assume that anyone will improve that much, that quickly!
Ya hes the fastest ever because he took multiple fly kicks off each wall.
