On Thursday at the North Carolina 14 and Under Long Course Championships in Cary, NC, the SwimMAC Carolina quartet of Max Osman, Norvin Clontz, Grange Bartee, and Evan Prabhu combined to break the 2019 boys 13-14 800-meter free relay national age group record by 4.55s at 7:49.60. The original record was held by Nick Grulke, Joey Chang, Mitchell Schott, and Allen Cai at 7:54.15 of the Irvine NOVA Aquatics, set at the 2019 California SCS Junior Olympics.
Osman opened the relay with a massive lifetime best swim of 1:55.94, taking down his less than one-month-old personal best of 2:01.43. Splitting 26.88/29.16/29.48/30.42, Osman now ranks 47th all-time on the boys 13-14 U.S. performers list, out-performing Cai of NOVA’s 1:55.96 flat start best from 2019. Then, Clontz followed with an equally-strong leg of 1:57.04, kicking his 2:00.95 timed best to the curb.
The touchpad did not catch enough of Bartee and Prabhu’s splits, however, both swimmers went 2:00.96 and 2:01.32 this morning during the 200 free prelims. Leading the pack in the boys 13-14 200 free is Clontz’s newly-minted flat start best of 1:58.28, followed by Osman’s quiet effort of 2:00.82.

Watching this swim in person was absolutely amazing. My team 2nd and we got blown out of the pool. These boys, and the SwimMac coaches deserve all of the credit. They came to swim, and they did that all weekend. Congratulations, well deserved.
Congratulations to these boys on their hard work!
Quite impressive!!! Congratulations to the team!
Let’s just celebrate what these kids were able to accomplish, what amazing swims by all of them!
All four boys have been coached by Coach Russ Kasl for years. Coach Russ is currently co-Head Coach of SwimMac and Director, Competitive Swimming. He has been SwimMac coach for 20 years and is currently nominated for Coach of the Year 2021. He is the Best. Thank you, Coach Russ!
But Megan Oesting ran a terrible program. Got it.
Megan had zero to do with the success of these boys. Zero.
lol okay, if you say so
This isn’t about Coach Megan running a good or bad program. Those boys have trained daily under Russ Kasl (Scott Wiltsey assisted) for the past four years. Their success is a result of their personal drive and Coach Russ’s training. Those boys are a team and a force together. That bond and talent wasn’t created over the past nine months. And the bond of that training group isn’t limited to those four. Let’s celebrate their accomplishment without adding needless noise.
TAC moment
Sus
Don’t be upset that it wasn’t a TAC team that set the record.
