Oakville Aquatic Club is home to 7 new National Age Group Records in the last year.
The Oakville Aquatic Club is excited to announce the addition of Coach Mike Thompson to it’s coaching staff. Mike is one of the top young coaches in Canada, and will assume an exciting new coaching role. Mike will be tasked with heading up the newly conceived “Senior Sprint Group”, geared towards athletes 15 years old and above who will specialize in sprint specific events.
“This is something that I’ve been excited about for a while,” says OAK head coach Sean Baker. “I want to be able to build our club and to be able to offer athletes the opportunity to focus on sprint events if that’s what they need. It will keep those athletes involved in the sport, training appropriately for those events and allowing them to have other interests. I think it’s great that a former head coach like Mike is interested in this position; He will definitely bring an element of excitement and credibility to this plan, which will help it succeed.”
Mike is also well known for his online blog, a podcast and a web series for the Swim Ontario website, all geared towards educating coaches, athletes and parents about the world of swimming and sharing his love for the sport with the greater swimming community.
“I’m really thrilled to join such a successful club and a staff of unbelievable coaches,” said Thompson in a statement earlier today. “Right now I need to be part of something like this to enhance my knowledge. I want to be able to learn from Sean and the other coaches and add some of those skills to my tool box while adding my own skills to theirs. This is a good example of a club thinking outside the box and trying new ideas, which is right up my alley. I couldn’t be more excited.”
Thompson will begin his employment with the Oakville Aquatic Club in September of 2013.
The above is a press release that was submitted to SwimSwam. Mike Thompson is a contributor to SwimSwam, and we wish him the best of luck in his new position.
I think more senior programs would benefit from having a sprint coach on board. Notall age groupers need to be distance swimmers and im ers.
I was unaware age group teams needed Sprint Coaches.
