The 2021 MARS LC Texas Age Group Swimming (TAGS) Championships wrapped up on Sunday, the inaugural start day for Tokyo Olympic competitive swimming. North Texas Nadadores’ Maximus Williamson wrapped his insane weekend with his 6th and 7th TAGS titles from this meet in the 50 free and 100 back. He moved up in both events’ all-time 13-14 rankings, now becoming one of the top-15 fastest 13-14 year olds in seven LCM events.
First off in the 100 back, Williamson took off 1.84s off his entry time to blast a 57.19, now ranking No. 5 all-time in 13-14 age group history, passing 13-14 age group bests of Ryan Murphy (57.76) and Aaron Peirsol (57.99). Williamson split the race 27.51/29.68, with his opening 50 a tenth slower than his 50 back leadoff (27.41) in North Texas’ 6th place 200 medley relay. He is now 0.57s off of Josh Zuchowski‘s 2019 NAG record of 56.62.

Then into the 50 free, Williamson entered the meet with a 24.23 previous lifetime best. He then lowered it twice, first leading off his team’s 200 free relay in 24.16 before going 24.03 in the individual event prelims. He then broke 24 seconds and swam 23.87, ranking No. 13 all-time.
Williamson kicked off his 2021 TAGS campaign with a 1:53.26 to break a new 200 free 13-14 NAG. He then moved up to No. 2 in the 100 free (51.25) and No. 3 in the 200 IM (2:06.36) all-time in 13-14 age group history. Then on Saturday night, he won the boys 13-14 200 back with a 7.4-second drop at 2:04.11, boosting to No. 9 all-time, and stormed 6 seconds off his 400 free best at 4:00.52, ranking No. 8 all-time.

More Sunday Highlights:
- In the girls 11-12 100 back, Nitro Swimming’s Lyla Lusk smashed a 1:07.28, winning by a 2-second margin over Lakeside’s Lila McCutchen (1:09.35). Lusk’s swim not only moves her up to No. 83 all-time, but No. 2 in the girls 11-12 age group for the 2020-2021 season.
- Switching gears to the girls and boys 10&U 50 free finals, Woodlands’ Kaia Finanger took the girls’ title at 30.15 while DADS’ Alexander Thomas won the boys’ title at 29.79. Both swimmers have now cracked the top 5 times in the nation, with Finanger ranking No. 5 for the girls and Thomas No. 3 on the boys’ side. Thomas is now tied for the 80th-fastest 10&U performer in the last decade to swim this event.
- Lakeside 12-year-old Charlie Wang won the boys 11-12 200 breast at 2:39.24, followed by City of Plano’s Paul Chu at 2:42.58. Wang now moves up to No. 75 all-time in the 11-12 historical rankings and No. 4 in the U.S. this season.
- Moving up to the boys 13-14 200 breast, Texas Ford’s Jackson Armour entered the meet with a 2:36.59, then dropped to 2:33.60 in prelims before smashing six seconds to a 2:26.80. Armour’s time just made the all-time top 100 age group times as well as ranking No. 14 in the nation this season.
- Winning the girls 11-12 50 free was DADS’ Renee Nealon at 27.88, which ranks No. 13 in the nation this season. Lakeside 11-year-old Kennedi Southern took second at 28.35 while another DADS swimmer, Lexi Smith, took a narrow third at 28.40.
- Bumping up to the girls 13-14 50 free final, Waterloo 14-year-old Ella Mongenel took first at 26.79, holding off Lakeside 13-year-old Natalie Schneider (26.87) by 0.08s.
