SAN FRANCISCO – Cade Belshay (wrestling) and Emma Nordin (swimming) are this year’s Arizona State Pac-12 Conference Postgrad Scholarship recipients for the 2020-21 academic year, the conference announced today. Belshay will pursue a master’s of management degree from Duke, while Nordin will attend Indiana University for her MD in dentistry.
In 1999, the Postgraduate Scholarship Program was created to both honor and financially assist some of the Conference’s most outstanding athletes and scholars as they continue their educations and prepare for careers in their chosen industries. The scholarships, worth $9,000 each, are awarded to up to two student-athletes from each Pac-12 school annually. These worthy student-athletes maintained a minimum 3.0 grade-point average and demonstrated a commitment to education, campus and community involvement, and leadership.
Belshay, a Barrett Honors College graduate, graduated summa cum laude this spring, earning a degree in finance. He earned a bronze medal in the 184 weight class at the Pac-12 Championships and took fourth in the 82kg class at U23 Nationals in November.
Nordin earned her degree in biological science (neurobiology, physiology and behavior), graduating summa cum laude and as a Tip of the Fork Cohort member. The swimming and diving team elected to redshirt the entire program in 2020-21, but Nordin leaves ASU with a Pac-12 title in the 500 free and silver medals in the mile and 200 free – all earning during the 2019-20 season. Nordin’s victory in the 500 free was also the fastest time (4:33.74) in the nation that season and she capped off her collegiate career with four swims at the U.S. Team Trials this past June.
To be selected for a 2020-21 Pac-12 Postgraduate Scholarship, a student-athlete must have:
- Maintained an overall undergraduate minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 (based on a 4.00 scale);
- Been accepted to or already be enrolled as a full-time student in a graduate or professional program at an accredited institution, or in a postgraduate program for which an undergraduate degree is required for admission;
- Performed with distinction as a member of a varsity team; and
- Exemplified behavior, both in competition and beyond, in a manner that has brought credit to the student-athlete, the institution, and intercollegiate athletics.
Congratulations! Emma!
