Futures Qualifier Kaleigh Spears Commits to MIT

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Kaleigh Spears from Fairhope, Alabama has announced her commitment to swim at Division III Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) beginning this fall.

I am beyond excited to announce my official commitment to swim and study at MIT! I want to thank my parents, coaches, and teammates for making this a reality. Go Tech!”

Spears competes for TNT Swimming in Daphne, AL. In both 2020 and 2021 she was a member of multiple relays that won the Southeastern Swimming Championships. In the past year, Spears has dropped time in numerous events. In February, she competed at the Southeastern Swimming Championships where she notched a best time of 59.70 in the 100 backstroke. She also attended NCSAs in March where she achieved best times in the 50 freestyle (24.64), 100 freestyle (53.39), and 200 butterfly (2:10.43). At NCSAs she was on both the fourth place 200 freestyle relay and sixth place 400 freestyle relay.

Spears attended Fairhope High School in Fairhope, AL and graduated this spring. At the 2019 Alabama Swim State Meet, she became the first state champion swimmer at 7A Fairhope High School when she won the 100 butterfly in a time of 56.62. Her best short course times are:

  • 100 butterfly: 56.62
  • 200 butterfly: 2:10.43
  • 200 IM: 2:07.99
  • 400 IM: 4:40.67
  • 50 freestyle: 24.64
  • 100 freestyle: 53.39

MIT is a private university located in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The school is a member of the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) which canceled their 2020-2021 winter sports season due to COVID-19.

At the 2020 NEWMAC Championships, MIT won their conference on both the men’s and women’s sides. Spears projects to add to the team’s points by placing in multiple A finals. Her 100 butterfly would have been 3rd, 200 IM would have tied for 5th place, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, and 200 butterfly would have been 8th. Spears is also close to the 2021 NCAA Division III ‘B’ cut of 56.58 in the 100 butterfly.

Spears will suit up for MIT this fall along with Jolie Kim, Kate Augustyn, and Kimberly Dutta as a member of the class of 2025.
