Zac Stubblety-Cook Talks Progression from 10th at Comm Games to Olympic Champ

In the SwimSwam Podcast dive deeper into the sport you love with insider conversations about swimming. Hosted by Coleman HodgesGarrett McCaffrey, and Gold Medal Mel Stewart, SwimSwam welcomes both the biggest names in swimming that you already know, and rising stars that you need to get to know, as we break down the past, present, and future of aquatic sports.

We sat down with newly minted 2020 Olympic champion in the 200 breast, Zac Stubblety-Cook. After talking about his obsessive coffee habits for the first 7 minutes of the pod (this guy does not mess around with his caffeine), we get into his swimming. He takes us through his Olympic performance, and specifically through his gold medal race in the 200 breast, but then we take it back. Zac goes all the way to 2017-2018 to his first senior international team and the pressure that brought. He explains how he crumpled in that first scenario and how he addressed this anxiety and pressure moving forward.

My dudes can we get a coffee podcast rolling on here? As a fellow coffee addict, I could have listened to that for another hour!

Don’t get me wrong: ZSC and Kyle are both fantastic, interesting, incredible athletes. But it seems odd that literally Australia’s top 10 Olympic swimmers (according to the medal table) were all women and we’ve only seen interviews with two men.

I get your point but I’m glad Zac is getting some airtime and recognition .. his Olympic win has largely been ignored by the media even here in Australia so to hear from him about his Olympic experience is a wonderful breath of fresh air from the usual Emma Ariarne and Kaylee interviews … and I think it will hopefully inspire other men to raise their level hopefully..

Has it? ZSC was a guest question asker on Have You Been Paying Attention and was featured on the Cheap Seats last night. He seems to be getting much more coverage post Games from what I’ve seen.

That’s good if he is then .. maybe they’ve woken up to the fact that men deserve attention too if they win a gold Medal .. otherwise it gets boring interviewing same set of women over and over and getting their same perspective over and over .. during the Olympics itself I hardly saw Zac appearing on sunrise etc

I wasn’t meaning it as a criticism. I assumed there would be some logistics involved. But good to hear!

Do you edit out swearing? Because if it’s the one I’m thinking of you might need to #F***Yeah

Another excellent interview. A couple questions I wish Coleman had asked:

1. Both Zac and Kyle are both very well spoken. Did either or both go to Uni and how much more do they have to go? Phd in coffee doesn’t count.
2. Has Zac always back halved his 200 or does he do it because of Chupkov’s influence?
His coach, Vince Raleigh, is a good guy! He has had excellent success with other breastrokers in the past!

Zac is currently studying a psychology degree not sure on how long left to go however would assume he is doing part time, Chalmers on the other hand has been a full-time athlete. & from watching Zac since a younger age that is always how he has swam his 200’s.

I’d love a bonus podcast where you guys talk about other interests outside of swimming. He definitely knows a lot about coffee!

USA : Georgia, Indiana, Cal?
…or…
Internationally: With Kamminga, in Japan with Shato?
…or…
To spice things up: With Michael/Peter Andrews, with Jacoby in Alaska ;), in Russia with Chupkov, with Peaty and Mel Marshall for some speeeed! In South Africa with Tatjana!

Training with Lilly at Indiana should be in the ‘spice things up’ category.

Do you know who will still be swimming this fall or has retired or has moved to another club?

About Coleman Hodges

Coleman Hodges

Coleman started his journey in the water at age 1, and although he actually has no memory of that, something must have stuck. A Missouri native, he joined the Columbia Swim Club at age 9, where he is still remembered for his stylish dragon swim trunks. After giving up on …
