Florida’s All-American, NCAA Champion, and Olympic silver medalist Elizabeth Beisel has been named the Capital One Women’s At-Large Academic All-American of the Year.
Beisel, a telecommunications major with a 3.63 GPA, won the 400 IM National Championship at the 2013 NCAA Championship meet, following upon a silver medal in the same event from last year’s summer Olympics.
This is the second consecutive year that she has been named a First Team Academic All-American, joining former great Tracy Caulkins among Gator swimmers to have achieved the honor.
Beisel was one of 74 female swimmers or divers who were named to All-District teams in the At-Large category, and those All-District recipients moved on for All-American selection. The award is a balance of academic, leadership, and athletic success. Though this category doesn’t include the most high-profile sports athletically, in general it is the highest-performing category academically, making it likely the most competitive award.
The men’s award went to Army lacrosse player Brendan Buckley.

Gemmell was 2nd team, and Vreeland was 3rd team.
I’m sorry but how?? Is everyone automatically entered in this or do you have to nominate people? How does a 3.6 telecomm major win? It can’t be all because of athletics: Beisel had a great ncaa meet, but it’s not like she won 3 events or shattered a bunch of records.
Each Athletics Department names three men and three women from among the sports in the At-Large category. Then the All-District teams are named. Those recipients of All-District honors are all thrown into a pool to vie for All-American, and the First Team All-Americans are thrown together to choose the “of the year”. In many sports (football, basketball, women’s volleyball) it’s all one sport, and schools can name any number of athletes they want. The at-large category wins differently.
I think you should give the girl a bit more credit…as well as all the other student-athletes. Beisel is able to maintain an above average GPA while still managing to win olympic medals and ncaa championships. I think a 3.6 is a pretty huge deal when swimming is most likely her main priority at the moment. If you can accomplish what she can then props to you… but if not, we should all be applauding her as well as these other kids for their efforts in the pool and the classroom.
