WOMEN’S 400 FREESTYLE
Canadian 15-year-old star Summer McIntosh blew away the field en route to a win in the women’s 400 free at ISL match 5 today. McIntosh swam a blistering personal best of 3:58.78, leading a 1-2 punch for Toronto in this event, with Julia Hassler clocking a 4:01.09.
The swim absolutely shattered the Canadian Record with the swim, coming in 3.45 seconds under the previous record, which was held by Mary-Sophie Harvey at 4:02.23. McIntosh has also now launched herself into the conversation for the eventual ISL champion in the women’s 400 free. Her time would have been right towards the top end last season.
McIntosh allowed Iron’s Barbora Seemanova to take the race out ahead of her. Seemanova posted a really aggressive 56.53 on the first 100, with McIntosh clocking the next-fastest split in the field at 57.18. From the 3rd 50 on, McIntosh led, and expanded her lead throughout the remaining 6 50s. She kept her 3rd 50 under 30 seconds (29.76), which was critical in her establishing the lead, and being able to hang on to sub-4:00 pace.
Amazing. Can’t wait to see what else she is able to accomplish!
Oops, I was looking at lcm. Sorry about that.
Isn’t world record for short course metres 3:56 for 400 free?
3:53.92 scm, lcm is 3:56
holy shi**. she definitely will get that WR
edit: my dearest swimswam,
nobody, on earth, literally, assumes SCM in a title like this. please refrain from clickbait such as this because it ultimately detracts from the swimmers’ actual performance, ending in sheer and utter disappointment that she didn’t go 3:58.73 LCM. it’s as easy as adding “S”, “C”, and “M” to the title… we all know what you were trying to do here…
on the real: 3:58.7 SCM is good, but it’s about a 4:05-4:06 LCM. which isn’t even her best time and certainly not a canadian record long course, which is what readers would’ve and will continue to assume. so, yeah.
thank you,
swimfast
I tend to disagree. I knew ISL was on last night and assumed it had to have been scm. It’s not hard to click on the article anyway.
its not the reader’s responsibility really to know that there’s a SCM meet going on lol. also, why would I assume that a 15 year old was in the ISL? so I have to know the meet and the roster? ok..
it’s very not-obvious when a swimmer goes something SCM vs LCM. they’re too similar to just know the difference right off the bat. there’s been a rampage on the women’s 400 free lately and for a 15 year old Olympic finalist who goes 4:02 in prelims in Tokyo it would make perfect sense for there to have been a random last chance LCM meet in Canada that she went to with her club and, at 15, to drop… Read more »
What other meet is going on right now besides the ISL? You should have known before even reading the article.
I think it’s just common sense. She swam 4:02 at the Olympics 5-6 weeks ago and it seems pretty obvious that she couldn’t drop from 4:02 to 3:58.7 in LCM in that time frame.
the phrasing in the headline is typically a good indicator. if this was lcm, the headline would be reflective of how the swim sits in the all-time rankings, something like “15 yo mcintosh scares wjr, #3 performer all time” rather than the actual headline which makes no mention of her all-time ranking (which is actually lower than her lcm ranking in this event). look at the headline of any monster lcm swim vs a yards nag record that’s fast but also a reasonable time for an adult to clock, and you’ll see what I mean
Or like, ya know, if you’re as invested in this as you think you are, don’t get 100% of your news just from reading headlines?
It’s not the reader’s responsibility to read more than the headline? I think in this case, you’re responsible for “readbaiting” yourself.
There is wall to wall coverage of the ISL on the site at present. I’m honestly confused by anyone who knows the difference between SCM and LCM who clicked this link and wasn’t already aware of the fact summer swam this at ISL. that’s a very small percentage of this readership.
Amazing time. Not too far off the short course 400 free world record. Within reach for sure. Go Summer go!
Five seconds is still a long way
Lol no. It’s SCM, it’s a way off from WR
I thought this was lcm and I was about to freak out.
I said this last year- story headlines should have SC in the title. or Y for yards….
So did everyone else who forgot ISL today
👏👏👏👏
holy shit, Paris 2024 watch out
nvm i missed the part where this was ISL and thus SCM not LCM lmao but still an amazing swim for a 15 year old
amazing at any age
