HAYWARD, Calif. — The Cal State East Bay swimming team made a statement behind a tremendous performance on Friday afternoon, defeating conference rival Pepperdine, 196-66.

It was a big victory for CSUEB, which won the Pacific Coast Swim and Dive (PCSC) titles in two-consecutive seasons from 2018-2020.

Senior Alondra Ortiz led the way on Friday, recording first-place victories in both 100 and 200 backstroke. The Irvine native posted a time of 59.01 seconds in the 100 backstroke, while finishing the 200 in 2:07.72.

Ortiz also led off for the Pioneers’ 400 medley relay team that placed first in 3:58.04, which also included freshman Delaney Carlson, freshman Emma Knott and senior Isabel Rishwain.

Knott placed first in both the 100 freestyle (54.16) and 100 butterfly (59.06), while junior Tori Padilla earned first place in the 100 breaststroke (1:08.54).

Sophomore Chenoa Bodero was the top finisher in both the 200 IM (2:12.27) and 200 butterfly (2:11.25).

Freshman Justine Garcia placed first in the 200 freestyle (1:57.53), while senior Maddie Wittkowske won both the 1000 freestyle (10:47.17) and 500 freestyle (5:14.19).

Cal State East Bay returns to action next Saturday, Oct. 23, as the Pioneers take on another Division-I foe Nevada beginning at 11 a.m.

HAYWARD, California – The Pepperdine swimming and diving team fell to Cal State East Bay on Friday in its second dual meet of the season.

MEET RECAP

Emma Purdy (Truckee, Calif./Truckee HS) claimed the only win of the day for the Waves, leading the pack in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 25.15.

Other top performers include Kara Coughlin (Evergreen, Colo./Evergreen HS/Florida State) taking second in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:10.40, Emily Morton (Golden, Colo./Lakewood HS) placing second in the 200-yard IM with a 2:12.88 time and the 200-yard freestyle relay team of Purdy, Ellie Hendren (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Mountain Vista HS), Alexandra Browne (Arlington, Va./Washington-Liberty HS) and Jenna Sanchez (Highland, Calif./Redlands East Valley HS) earning second with a time of 1:40.94.

Third-place finishers include Lindsey Marian (Tampa, Fla./Berkeley Preparatory School) in the 1000-yard freestyle (11:15.01), Jessica Calderoni (Los Altos Calif./Sacred Heart Preparatory) in the 200-yard butterfly (2:16.85), Morton in the 200-yard backstroke (2:11.06) and the 100-yard backstroke (1:01.56), Browne in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:35.01) and Olivia Kayye (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill HS) in the 500-yard freestyle (5:24.73). Pepperdine’s 400-yard medley relay team of Morton, Kayye, Lexie Deitemeyer (Golden, Colo./Golden HS) and Sanchez claimed third with a time of 4:03.43. Overall, Cal State East Bay defeated Pepperdine 196-66.

NEXT UP: Pepperdine will make the trip to Davis tomorrow morning for a dual meet with the UC Davis Aggies starting at 10:00 a.m. No live video or stats will be available.
