In our GMX7 Weekly Wonders of Age Group Swimming series, we celebrate swimmers of every age and experience level with age group profiles of some recent results.
Manita Sathianchokwisan, 17, Bolles School Sharks (FL-BSS): A Texas A&M University commit, Manita Sathianchokwisan set a new Bolles School record in the girls’ 50 freestyle at the 2021 FHSAA 1A Region 1 meet, putting up a time of 22.63 to erase the previous mark of 22.66 set by Kasey Schmidt in 2013. The 17-year-old Sathianchokwisan also put up a time of 50.31 in the 100 free, just a tenth off her lifetime best.
Noah Cakir, 14, Team Suffolk (MR-TS): Cakir has set best times across 10 different events so far this season, including six at the LIAC Chappy’s Big Race Invitational last weekend. The highlight of those swims came in the 200 breaststroke, where Cakir dropped more than a second from his best in 2:05.06 to move into a tie for 66th all-time in the boys’ 13-14 age group.
Reid O’Connell, 12, Long Island Aquatic Club (MR-LIAC): LIAC’s O’Connell has also been a personal-best-setting tear over the last two months, hitting a time of 4:20.07 on Oct. 10 to move into 39th in the 11-12 age group. Just two weeks later O’Connell was back at it, dropping more than three seconds in the 200 IM in 2:02.03 to take over 53rd all-time in age group history.
Camden Doane, 15, King Aquatic Club (PN-KING): The 15-year-old Doane hit a trio of best times at the 2021 PN October Challenge, including clocking 2:01.43 in the 200 IM to land the 100th spot all-time in the girls’ 15-16 age group.
Ava Ippoliti, 16, Austin Swim Club (ST-ASC): Austin Swim Club’s Ippoliti slammed down a four-second best time in the 200 breaststroke at the Bob Thompson Invitational two weeks ago, clocking 2:17.39 to extinguish her old PB of 2:21.67.
Ilya Kharun, 16, Sandpipers of Nevada (CA-SAND): Kharun was featured in our Weekly Wonders feature earlier this SCY season, but he’s just continued to churn out phenomenal swims. The 16-year-old registered eight new bests at the Sandpipers’ Pumpkin Invite last weekend, headlined by a blazing 1:45.94 in the 200 butterfly, a time that vaults him up into 24th in the boys’ 15-16 age group.
