WILLIAMSBURG, VA.- William & Mary women’s swimming continued their dominant start to the 2021-22 season Saturday afternoon with a convincing 184-77 win in Williamsburg. Once again, the meet was highlighted by Missy Cundiff setting a pool record for the third straight week, swimming 22.73 in the 50 free.
The Tribe won 13 of the 14 events and led things off with a one, two finish in the 200 medley relay. Grace Tramack would follow up with a distance win in the 1,000 freestyle event. Katie Stevenson and Elizabeth Intihar would finish first and second respectively in the 200 free before Anna Kenna and Kat Vanbourgondien followed with gold and silver finishes of their own in the 100 back.
Annie Tuttle would win the 100 breaststroke with a 1:03.09 time before Cundiff finished a full two seconds ahead of the second place time in the 50 free. After the break Kenna would earn her second win of the day just edging out Stevenson in the 100 free. Vanbourgondien took home first place in the 200 back, proceeding Tuttle’s third win of the day, this time in the 200 breaststroke.
Intihar swam a dominant performance in the 500 free finishing 15 seconds in front of second place, Cundiff would then take her second individual win of the afternoon blowing away the competition in the 100 fly.
Intihar would finish the afternoon in style touching the wall first in the 200 individual medley before her teammates had relay team finishes of first and third in the 400 free to ice the meet.
UP NEXT: Next up the Tribe will head to Wilmington for a CAA Pod next Saturday and Sunday.
WILLIAMSBURG, VA.- William & Mary men’s swimming hung on late to narrowly defeat UMBC 132-129 Saturday afternoon in Williamsburg. The Tribe were able to build a lead winning nine of the 14 events.
The Green and Gold got off to a hot start as Micah Lowe, Cole Younger, Gavin Lamoureux, and Graham Hertweck swam 1:33.33 to win the 200 medley relay. Lowe followed up with a first place finish just out touching teammate Aaron Tingley in the 100 back.
Younger and John O’Hara would follow with one, two finishes in the 100 breaststroke. Hertweck pulled out the victory, swimming a swift 20.90 in the men’s 50 free and followed with a first-place 46.65 in the 100 freestyle.
Lowe increased the Tribe’s lead pacing the field with a 1:52.59 time to take the 200 and sweep the backstroke events. Younger would also sweep, claiming first in the 200 breaststroke ahead of teammate Conor Sokolowski.
In the 100 fly it was Noah Fields swimming past the competition to give the Tribe nine more points with a win. After the final break, Younger and Sokolowski would finish first and second respectively in the individual medley to ensure victory for the Green and Gold.

The UMBC women’s and men’s swimming and diving teams will continue their busy fall meet schedule when they travel to Williamsburg, Va. to take on William & Mary on Saturday, Oct. 30. The meet gets underway at the Bee McLeod Recreation Center at 2:00 p.m.
- The women are coming off a five-medal effort at Navy one week ago. Junior Jenna Gwinn (Baltimore, Md./Mount de Sales) continued her outstanding start to the 2021-22, capturing the 100 yard breaststroke event in Annapolis. Gwinn won twice, taking both breaststroke events, in the opening meet versus Delaware and Johns Hopkins.
- Graduate student Natalija Marin (Belgrade, Serbia) (200 yard butterfly), Catonsville High School product and sophomore Makaela Hill (100 freestyle) and junior Sierra Tosten (Hagerstown, Md.) (100 butterfly) all earned second place finishes at Navy.
- The men were led by senior Kai Wisner (Syracuse, N.Y.) and junior Gabe Laracuente (Gaithersburg, Md./Good Counsel) at Navy’s Lejeune Hall.
- Wisner secured second place in the 1000 yard freestyle and placed fourth in the 500 yard freestyle, while Laracuente was edged by .03 seconds in his quest to win the 50 freestyle. He continued his excellent meet by taking bronze in the 100 freestyle (46.52).
- The William & Mary women have earned victories over Johns Hopkins and Towson, while the men have been on the short end of the scoring against the Blue Jays and Tigers.
- The Retrievers and the Tribe last competed in the 2018-19 season at the UMBC Aquatic Complex. The women picked up a 158-139 victory, while the men fell narrowly by a score of 150.5-143.5. Marin won the 200 butterfly and Wisner captured the 1000 freestyle.
The Retrievers return to the Aquatic Complex for home meets on the next two Saturdays. UMBC hosts Towson on Saturday, Nov. 6 at 1:00 p.m.
