ANNAPOLIS, Md. –– A school-record performance by diver Hannah Montau (Sr., Germantown, Md.) highlighted a sweep of American, Bucknell and Lafayette by the Navy swimming and diving teams, Saturday at Lejeune Hall in Annapolis.
In the women’s meets, Navy (6-1) defeated American (1-5), 198-87, won a 157-134 decision over Bucknell (5-1) and beat Lafayette (2-3), 200-89. The Navy (6-1) men’s team posted a 191-90 win over the Eagles (0-6), beat the Bison (5-1), 170-119, and recorded a 189-92 victory over the Leopards (2-3).
“Heading into the week and today’s meet,” said Navy men’s swimming head coach Bill Roberts, “our focus was centered on process and how we put together each race. Removing any and all expectations for time and placement, they did a terrific job and especially in the middle of a heavy training phase. We were very impressed with what they were able to accomplish today.
“Also, it was a terrific environment for Navy aquatics today with the meet sandwiched between two Navy water polo games. It was great to see a lot of energy and excitement surrounding Navy aquatics and Navy athletics as a whole today in Lejeune Hall.”
“It was wonderful to compete against three league teams,” said Navy women’s swimming head coach John Morrison. “Overall, we are really pleased with the progress we have made over the last two weeks. We made a few changes in training and preparation, and our team responded well and raised expectations. We are excited to keep our progress going.”
Hannah Montau (Sr., Germantown, Md.) swept the two diving events. She scored 297.25 points to win the one-meter board by 36 points and totaled 323.30 points to win the three-meter event by 68 points.
Montau’s one-meter score broke the school record in the event of 296.70 that was set by Stacia Johnson on Jan 15, 1992, and her three-meter score was just three points behind the school standard of 326.85 established by Katie Griffin nearly 14 years ago to the day.
“I was really happy with how our divers performed today,” said Navy diving coach Rich MacDonald. “We did a lot of good things. It was a special day with Hannah breaking the record. I know that has been a big goal of hers ever since she arrived at Navy.”
Both Navy programs had three Mids win multiple events on the day. In addition to Montau’s effort for the women’s team, Martina Thomas (Sr., Fayetteville, Ark.) won the 200 free by 1.18 seconds with her time of 1:49.15 and recorded a three-quarters of a second victory in the 100 free with a clocking of 51.35. Sydney Harrington (Sr., Fairfax, Va.) continued her strong early season performance by winning both butterfly events. She first touched the wall in a time of 1:58.76 to win the 200 fly by just under three seconds, then tallied a time of 54.28 to place first in the 100 fly by eight-tenths of a second.
On the men’s side, Everet Andrew (Fr., Wilmette, Ill.) was the first multi-event winner for the Mids as he won the 200 free and 500 free races. His time of 1:39.81 in the former gave him the victory by 1.4 seconds and his effort of 4:35.34 in the latter provided him a nine-tenths of a second victory. Jonah Harm (So., Placerville, Calif.) followed with wins in the 100 breast and 100 fly races. He posted a time of 54.43 to win the 100 breast by 1.6 seconds and a time of 47.78 to win the 100 fly by six-tenths of a second. Finally, Blakeman Shaw (Fr., Coral Gables, Fla.) recorded victories in both diving events. He scored 300.40 points to win the one-meter board by 10 points and accrued 310.85 points on the three meter to win the event by 28 points.
Additional event winners for the Navy women’s team were Megan Murphy (Fr., West Palm Beach, Fla.), 100 backstroke (56.23); Reagan Johnson (Jr., Charlotte, N.C.), 100 breaststroke (1:04.54); Brooke West (Sr., River Forest, Ill.), 50 freestyle (23.88); Gabi Baldwin (So., Lake Elms, Minn.), 200 backstroke (2:03.71); and Haley Harris (Fr., St. John’s, Fla.), 200 individual medley (2:05.55). The Mids also won both relay events.
Completing the list of event winners for the Navy men were Garrett McGovern (So., Nashville, Tenn.), 1000 freestyle (9:18.26); Pat Colwell (So., New Canaan, Conn.), 200 butterfly (1:47.90); Trevor Torres (Fr., Satellite Beach, Fla.), 100 freestyle (45.88); Caleb Mauldin (Sr., Chesapeake, Va.), 200 backstroke (1:51.15); Jakob Frick (Fr., Fredericksburg, Va.), 200 breaststroke (2:01.17); and Jackson Schultz (Jr., Millersville, Md.), 200 individual medley (1:50.57). Navy also won the 200 medley relay.
