THE BASICS:

– Event: 2021 MIT Winter Invitational

– Results: 1st of 5 (1842.5 points) – Final

– Location: Cambridge, Mass. (Zesiger Sports and Fitness Center Pool)

– The Lead: The No. 10 MIT men’s swimming and diving team won the 2021 MIT Winter Invitational on Sunday. The Engineers closed out the weekend by registering two program and NEWMAC open records, seven victories, and 10 NCAA B-cuts.

EVENT HIGHLIGHTS:

200-Yard Medley Relay

  • The “A” relay, comprised of junior Adam Janicki (Falls Church, Va.), senior Kyri Chen (Naperville, Ill.), sophomore Alan Yu (Herndon, Va.), and sophomore Tobe Obochi (Highland Park, Ill.) finished first in 1:28.35. The performance was an MIT program record, a NEWMAC open record, the fifth fastest time in the country, an NCAA B-cut, and 2019 invited time.
  • The “B” relay finished fourth in 1:31.11. The Engineers were represented by first-year Michael Wong (Pottstown, Pa.), first-year Roderick Huang (Cupertino, Calif.), first-year Owen Matteson (Sarasota, Fla.), and senior Alex Ellison (Tomball, Texas).

500-Yard Freestyle

  • Sophomore Jaden Luo (Austin, Texas) won the event in 4:28.93. His time ranks eighth in the country, is an NCAA B-cut, and a 2019 invited time.
  • Sophomore Brian Li (Austin, Texas) was the runner up with a time of 4:32.07, resulting in a B-cut.
  • Sophomore Kyle Hare (Medford, N.J.) finished third in 4:34.51.

200-Yard Backstroke

  • Janicki was the runner up as he touched the wall in 1:50.91.
  • Wong claimed third place with a time of 1:51.04.

100-Yard Butterfly

  • Matteson and first-year Shepard Jiang (Princeton, N.J.) tied for first place with a time of 48.88. The performance was an NCAA B-cut and a 2019 invited time.
  • Yu finished fifth in 49.56.

200-Yard Breaststroke

  • Huang won the event in 2:00.35, resulting in an MIT program record, a NEWMAC open record, a B-cut, a 2019 invited time, and the ninth fastest time in Division III.
  • Junior Samuel Song (Johns Creek, Ga.) finished fourth in 2:05.58.

100-Yard Freestyle

  • Ellison captured first place with a time of 44.85. He recorded an NCAA B-cut and a 2019 invited time by .01 seconds.
  • Obochi was the runner up as he touched the wall in 44.91, earning a B-cut.
  • Luo finished fourth in 45.21, registering a B-cut by .06 seconds.

200-Yard Individual Medley

  • Huang finished first with a time of 1:50.67, generating a B cut and a 2019 invited time.
  • First-year Alex Podrez (Beachwood, Ohio) was the runner-up as he logged a time of 1:51.94.
  • Senior David He (South Setauket, N.Y.) finished fourth in 1:52.09.
  • Li came in fifth in 1:52.74.
  • Sophomore Aaron Zhu (Chelmsford, Mass.) rounded out the Engineers in the “A” final by placing sixth with a time of 1:54.64.

400-Yard Freestyle Relay

  • The “A” relay, comprised of Chen, Ellison, Luo, and Obochi, won the event in 2:58.70. They posted the third fastest time in the country, a B cut, and 2019 invited time.
  • The “B” relay finished third in 3:04.47. MIT was represented by junior Trent Piercy (Austin, Texas), senior Nicholas Baginski (Hawthorn Woods, Ill.), Wong, and sophomore Arnold Su (Irvine, Calif.).

OVERALL STANDINGS:

– No. 17 Tufts University was the runner-up (1771.5), followed by RPI (710), Wheaton College (399), and Keene State College (210).

UP NEXT:

– MIT returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 8 when it travels to NEWMAC foe U.S. Coast Guard Academy for an 11:00 a.m. meet.

CAMBRIDGE – The Tufts University women’s swimming & diving team won the three-day MIT Winter Invitational which finished up on Sunday.

Out of seven teams, the Jumbos were first with a 1,753 score. The host Engineers took second with 1,634 points and Wheaton College was third (730).

The Jumbos won the 400 freestyle relay with a 3:27.16 time on Sunday night to close out their victory. The foursome of Jillian CudneyKatelin IsakoffClaire Brennan (pictured) and Mary Hufziger finished 2.67 seconds in front of second-place MIT (3:29.83).

Brennan had won the 500 freestyle earlier in the meet with a 4:57.52 mark, with Isakoff second (4:58.12). The Jumbos later took the top six spots in the 100 freestyle led by Cudney’s 51.30 and another runner-up finish by Isakoff at 52.17 seconds.

Tufts newcomers Mary Laurita, a graduate student who last competed at Bowdoin College, and freshman Abby Miller were second in the 100 butterfly and the 200 breaststroke, respectively. Laurita’s time was 56.11 and Miller’s was 2:24.08. Laurita had a 55.82 in the 100 fly prelims.

Senior Abby Claus posted a pair of thirds on Sunday, in the 200 backstroke with a 2:03.85 time and in the 200 individual medley where she touched in 2:07.53. In the 200 back prelims she had a 2:03.27 mark.

The Jumbos had led off Sunday night’s finals with a 1:44.12 in the 200 medley relay for third place. The Tufts foursome was Anne YoungerElle Morse, Laurita and Cudney.

Tufts swims in a tri-meet at Wesleyan University with Williams College next Saturday.

Jaden Luo’s 1:37.13 is the highlight for MIT men. He did that time as a high schooler but that was a whole pandemic ago, so it’s darn good for MIT’s prospects to see it’s still in the tank. Also a team record for MIT. I didn’t realize Richardson dropped off their roster but that hampers their nationals prospects quite a bit.

Obviously Edenna Chen’s 1:00.9 1br for the women was outstanding, but I think the Tufts women were a lot more impressive overall especially since because of NESCAC rules they’ve literally only had official training for one month prior to this meet… They’d have to make a bunch of big improvements to overthrow Kenyon+Emory at the top, but its hard… Read more »

Tufts women still have a ways to go to even win NESCAC. The Williams basically women have a stranglehold on the conference. Tufts is good at the top but they haven’t historically had the depth to compete with Williams.
