Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.
David Szczygieł from Oswiecim, Poland has announced his commitment to continue his academic and athletic careers at Division II Davenport University beginning in the 2022-2023 school year. He is a huge pickup for the team and has the potential to make an impact at the conference and national levels as well as school history.
“I chose this school because it gives me many opportunities and is a holy center for training. Moreover, the trainer is very motivating to train. I think I will learn a lot there and I will fulfill my dreams related to swimming. I hope we will create a harmonious team with swimmers.”
Szczygieł is 19 years old and swims for UKP UNIA Oswiecim. In March, he attained numerous long course best times. Those best times included the 200 freestyle (2:00.90), 100 butterfly (57.80), and 400 IM (4:40.55).
At the Polish National Championships in April and May, he earned a finals swim in the 200 long course butterfly and finished 14th in a time of 2:03.84. He also swam the 200 IM and finished 32nd 2:13.18).
His best short course meters times (with SCY conversions according to the SwimSwam converter) are:
- 200 butterfly: 1:59.83 (1:47.95)
- 200 IM: 2:03.80 (1:51.53)
- 400 IM: 4:23.34 (3:57.24)
- 200 freestyle: 1:53.51 (1:42.26)
Davenport University is a private university located in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The school is a member of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC). Head coach Justin Vasquez is in his fifth season with the team.
The Davenport men finished sixth out of seven teams at the 2021 GLIAC Championships. Based on his best converted times, Szczygieł has the potential to make an immediate impact at the conference level. His converted times would have made the ‘A’ final of the 200 and 400 IMs, 200 butterfly, and the ‘B’ final of the 200 freestyle.
He also has the potential to make an impact at the national level as his best converted time in the 200 butterfly would already give him the NCAA Division II ‘B’ cut. He is just two one-hundredths off what it took to qualify as it took a time of 1:47.93. His converted time in the 400 IM time also gives him the ‘B’ cut, but he is a couple seconds off what it took to qualify as it took a time of 3:54.93. These times are huge for Davenport as no one on the roster last year achieved a ‘B’ cut.
Szczygieł also has potential to write school history as his best converted times would already give him the school records in the 200 butterfly, 200 IM, and 400 IM.
Szczygieł will arrive on campus next fall as a member of the class of 2026 along with Marco Cabrera.
