Australian Olympic swimmer Emily Seebohm is taking her skills to the jungle as a member of the Australian version of “I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!”
The 29-year-old Seebohm hasn’t competed since the Tokyo Olympic Games. She was announced as a cast member of the reality show on Sunday, where celebrities compete in challenges in the Australian jungle to win $100,000 for their charity of choice.
Seebohm has competed in four Olympic games and won three Olympic golds, three silvers, and a bronze. In Tokyo, Seebohm placed fifth in the 100m backstroke, third in the 200m backstroke, and took home gold as part of the 4x100m medley relay. She’s a Commonwealth Games medalist, as well as a Short Course World Championships medalist. She’s a veteran on the international swimming scene, having competed and medaled at major international meets like the FINA World Championships and the Pan Pacific Championships.
Now she joins other Australian celebrities on the show, including Masterchef’s Poh Ling Yeow and former AFL player and coach Nathan Buckley.
“I’m doing this to show people that I’m not just a swimmer,” Seebohm said on the season premiere, a clip of which she posted to her Instagram story.
“I’m a Celebrity…” was originally a British reality show, but an Australian version has been airing since 2015. Celebrities compete for luxuries they left behind before they entered the jungle. Last season, “The Bachelor Australia” star Abbie Chatfield won the show. Overall, the show has been nominated multiple times for Logie Awards for Best Reality Program and Most Popular Reality Program.
So far, several Olympic swimmers have joined reality shows post-Tokyo. Britain’s Adam Peaty was involved with UK’s reality show “Strictly Come Dancing,” Denmark’s Pernille Blume placed third in dance show “Vild med dans,” and France’s Florent Manaudou competed on “Celebrity Hunted.”
