Swim of the Week is brought to you by arena, a SwimSwam partner.
Disclaimer: Swim of the Week is not meant to be a conclusive selection of the best overall swim of the week, but rather one Featured Swim to be explored in deeper detail. The Swim of the Week is an opportunity to take a closer look at the context of one of the many fast swims this week, perhaps a swim that slipped through the cracks as others grabbed the headlines, or a race we didn’t get to examine as closely in the flood of weekly meets.
In a week where competitions were few and far between (unless you count 75s with fins in practice), Spring Grove swimmer Daniel Gordon earns Swim of the Week honors after breaking yet another record at a high school meet in Pennsylvania.
Gordon, a University of Florida commit who also swims for York YMCA, clocked in a time of 50.16 in the men’s 100 butterfly (SCY) at Spring Grove High School’s meet against Gettysburg on Jan. 4, breaking the school, pool and YAIAA league records.
The 18-year-old now owns every individual boys’ record in Spring Grove history, having also lowered marks in the 50 free (20.76), 100 free (45.17), 500 free (4:38.12), 100 breast (57.37) and 200 IM (1:53.18) this season.
His 100 fly performance gives him the league record in four events, joining the 50 free, 100 free and 200 free (1:42.55, set last season), giving him more YAIAA records than any male swimmer in league history.
Still eyeing his first Pennsylvania state championship title, the senior would become the first YAIAA boys’ swimmer to do so in 13 years if he manages to reach his goal later this winter.
Gordon’s personal best time in the 100 fly is actually over a second faster, having hit a 49.12 at the YOTA Arena Capital Classic in early December, so his league record is only safe until the next time he steps on the blocks.
