Lees-McRae Defeats Emory & Henry in Friday Dual

EMORY, Va. – The Lees-McRae College Men’s & Women’s Swimming Teams picked up a pair of victories over Emory & Henry College Friday afternoon. The men’s team broke three records while winning one race while the women set a new program best in the process of winning an event.

The Men
– The Wasps got the afternoon started with a record-setting performance in the 400-meter medley relay as freshmen Corey Kidd (Stockbridge, Ga.), Morgan Cassell (Hubert, N.C.), Payton Nabors (Lawrenceville, Ga.) and Kyle Berry (Ringgold, Ga.) touched the wall in 4:18.39.
– Freshman Matthew Gocke (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) won the 400-meter freestyle in 4:30.34 and was the runner-up in the 800-meter freestyle (9:20.53).
– Kidd set a new E&H best in the 200-meter backstroke with a time of 2:23.22 finishing third and was also the runner up in the 200-meter individual medley (2:24.37).
– Nabors turned in a new school record in the 200-meter butterfly, stopping the watches in 2:25.57 while Cassell was the runner-up in the 200-meter breaststroke.
– Berry was third in both the 50- and 100-meter freestyles.

The Women
– Freshman Paige Gelenski (Boca Raton, Fla.) won the 200-fly with a school-record time of 2:38.30 and took third in the 400-meter freestyle (5:01.00).
– Freshman Peyton Helscher (Simi Valley, Calif.) was the runner-up in the 800-free, recording a 10:39.17 and third in the 200-backstroke at 2:53.23.
– Freshman Rachel Ritter (Gibsonville, N.C.) finished second in the 200-meter breaststroke in 3:05.04 and also finished third in the 200-meter individual medley (2:50.67).
– Freshman Tilly Craddock (Christiansburg, Va.) was third in both the 100- and 200-meter freestyle as senior Cat Sweigart (Bridgewater, Va.) took fourth in the 50-meter freestyle and 200-meter breaststroke.

Up Next
– Emory & Henry visits Carson-Newman University on Saturday for a dual meet at 1:00 p.m. The Eagles are 14th in the latest CSCAA Division II Top 25 poll while the Lady Eagles are tied for eighth in the country.

Men’s Swimming

EMORY, Va. – Caleb EidsonNathan Higdon, and J.D. McCray were all double winners and swam a leg of the 400 medley and 400 free relay teams that clinched a victory, to pace the Lees-McRae men’s swimming team, who won 10 of the 11 total events, to a 138-59 dual meet victory over Emory & Henry this afternoon.

MEN’S NOTABLES:

  • Eidson touched first in both the 50 free (24.32) and 100 free (54.24), while Higdon won the 200 IM (2:18.79) and the 200 fly (2:22.26).
  • McCray posted victories in the 800 free (9:13.82) and in the 200 back (2:15.99), while also joining Higdon, Stephen Bandy, and Thomas Ware to win the 400 free relay with a time of 3:55.31.
  • Ware and Carson Cross also clinched a win in the 200 free (2:07.40) and in the 200 breast (2:38.15) respectively.
  • Chase DavisCooper Gobble, Cross, and Eidson also claimed the 400-medley relay with a time of 4:09.32.

FROM THE COACHES:

  • “This was a good first meet of the Spring semester. It was a bit of a challenge for us swimming in meters, but we managed to have some good swims. We are looking forward to competing again tomorrow and continuing to progress towards the Conference Carolinas Championships.”

UP NEXT:
The Bobcats will travel to Mars, Hill, North Carolina on Saturday for a double dual meet against both “Battle for the Blue Ridge Cup” rival King and Mars Hill starting at 1 p.m.

Women’s Swimming

EMORY, Va. – Tate AbbottFanny CourbotGuillermina Rentsch, and Taylor Simmons were all double winners as the Lees-McRae women’s swimming team won 10 of the 11 total events, including clinched each of the two relay events, to claim a 133-45 dual meet win over host Emory & Henry this afternoon.

WOMEN’S NOTABLES:

  • Abbott won both the 50 free (27.73) and 100 free (1:00.18) respectively, while Courbot touched first in both the 200 IM (2:34.32) and 200 breast (2:50.93).
  • Rentsch claimed the victory in both the 800 free (10:26.12) and in the 200 back (2:36.81), while also teaming up with Abbott, Courbot, and Ana Johnson to clinch the 400 medley relay with a time of 4:41.87.
  • Simmons won both the 200 free (2:18.34) and the 400 free (4:52.82).
  • Hannah GunsallusKayla Fleming, and Lucia Ruchti teamed up with Simmons to win the 400 free relay with a time of 4:25.17.
