World Championships Semifinalist Emelie Fast Commits to Tennessee (2023)

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Swedish swimmer Emelie Fast has verbally committed to the University of Tennessee. Fast is expected to join the Volunteers for the 2023-2024 season.

The 17-year old has represented her native Sweden at a number of international meets, mostly in short course meters at the senior level. That includes qualifying for her first two World Championship semifinals at December’s Short Course World Championships, where she placed 12th in the 100 breaststroke and 14th in the 100 IM.

Previous international opportunities at the senior level for Fast include November’s European Short Course Championships, where her best finish was 5th place in the 50 breaststroke; and the 2019 European Short Course Championships in Glasgow.

Fast was also a Tokyo 2020 Olympian, finishing 27th in the 100 breaststroke.

She holds at least 9 Swedish age group records in short course meters across the 50 breast, 100 breast, and 100 IM. She also has at least 8 more in long course, including the 13-year olds’ 50 backstroke record.

Best Times (Long Course Meters, Short Course Meters, Best Conversion to Short Course Yards):

LCM SCM
SCY (Converted)
50 free 26.89 25.05 22.56
100 free 58.65 53.99 48.63
50 breast 30.64 29.82 26.7
100 breast 1:06.64 1:05.10 58.23
200 breast 2:28.38 2:22.02 2:07.94
200 IM 2:20.52 2:10.82 1:57.85

Fast fits the mold of a number of swimmers that Tennessee has had success with lately: European internationals who arrive better at short course than long course, with enough twitch and versatility to contribute outside of their primary events. Others in this group include current sophomore Mona McSharry from Ireland, current super-senior Tjasa Pintar from Slovenia, current freshman Ellen Walshe from Ireland, and former swimmer Kira Toussaint of the Netherlands.

Her sprint breaststroke specialty will project her to join a breaststroke group led by McSharry, who leads the NCAA in the 100 yard breaststroke this season (57.46). The overall Tennessee group behind McSharry is a very veteran one – so the added depth from Fast will be crucial, especially at the conference level.

Like McSharry, she is also a potential contributor on Tennessee’s sprint free relays as well. Like McSharry, she will arrive as primarily a sprint breaststroker, but McSharry has shown substantial improvements in the 200 in her 18 months in Knoxville so far.

She joins a class of 2023 that includes the #5 American recruit in the class of 2023 Camille Spink, Tori Brostowitz, and Molly Blanchard so far. After a small and fairly-tame signing class of 2022, their 2023 class is shaping up to be one of the best in the country.

Another impressive pickup for Tennessee! UF and the Vols seem to be getting it done on the recruiting trail

I can’t think of a better name for a swimmer, outside of Richard “Dick” Quick

She is pretty good at all the strokes even though she has not done that much Fly and Back in recent years, but the 100 fly she did last spring converts to a 53 in yards.

The Following link is to all/most of her times:

BOOOOM!! Huge. Easily a top-10 recruit in this class and maybe even top 5. 58.2 would be the fastest 100 breast out of high school outside of Alex Walsh IIRC. Full second and a half faster than the fastest in this class. We’ve got another big-time international sprinter not public yet. Helluva class for Kredich and Huger.

P.S. forgot to mention Sophie Brisson with the rest of the class.
