Illinois hosted Nebraska on Saturday, January 22nd. Illinois is coming off of a win over Iowa and this was Nebraska’s first meet of 2022.
Both of these teams are looking to climb the ladder within the Big Ten Conference, and both are only home to women’s programs. At the 2020 Big Ten Championships, Nebraska finished 10th and Illinois finished 13th out of 13 teams respectively. At the 2021 Big Ten Championships, Nebraska rose to 7th and Illinois finished 12th respectively.
Nebraska was led by senior Madesyn Ronquillio who swept the backstroke events. She won the 100 backstroke in a time of 56.56 and the 200 backstroke in a time of 2:01.03. Ronquillio transferred from Boise State to Nebraska after her sophomore year.
Senior Shannon Stott also led the way for the Cornhuskers. Stott won the 200 butterfly in a time of 2:02.39 and finished second in the 100 butterfly in a time of 57.29. Stott also transferred to Nebraska after her sophomore year. Stott was originally at East Carolina but transferred when they planned to cut their program in 2020.
Diver Sara Troyer, a senior, won both diving events. She won the 1 meter with a score of 303.83 and the 3 meter with a score of 382.35.
The Fighting Illini were led by senior Abby Cabush who won both the 100 (51.37) and 200 (1:48.68) freestyles. Her 200 freestyle time was just off of her midseason best time of 1:47.71.
Sophomore Cara Bognar also led the way for the Illini. Bognar won the 400 IM in a dual meet best time of 4:23.49. Bognar also finished second in the 200 butterfly (2:04.09) and the 1650 freestyle (17:13.85).
Although the Illini did not win the meet overall, they showed their depth through the relays. Illinois won both the 200 medley relay (1:44.97) and the 200 freestyle relay (1:35.31).

- 100 breaststroke: Ella Stein, Nebraska (1:05.07)
- 50 freestyle: Laurel Bludgen, Illinois (23.88)
- 200 breaststroke: Maia Hall, Nebraska (2:21.32)
- 500 freestyle: Ilaria Murzilli, Nebraska (4:57.78)
- 100 butterfly: Lexi Kucera, Nebraska (57.13)
Nebraska has their next meet scheduled for January 28-29th at home against Rutgers. Illinois’s next meet is scheduled for January 29th at Purdue.
