Penn State seniors Madison Murtagh, Marie Schobel and Sierra Shurts, along with sophomore Kylie Rydland, led the team’s charge by winning two individual events apiece.
Murtagh won the women’s 500 (5:00.01) and 1000 freestyle (10:06.87), Schobel swept the 100 (53.85) and 200 back (1:57.00), Shurts won the 1-meter (272.40) and 3-meter (298.13) diving events, and Rydland rolled to wins in the 100 (1:04.30) and 200 breast (2:17.08).
Villanova’s lone win in the meet came in the women’s 200 IM, where Kelly Montesi used a huge back-half to win in 2:02.85 over Penn State’s Marget Shelly (2:04.81).
Men’s Recap
Penn State sophomore Ben Doyle led the men’s team with two individual victories, doing so in the 100 breast and 100 fly.
Doyle won the 100 breast by over two seconds in 54.21, crushing his previous best of 55.21 set at the Penn State Invitational in February 2021.
In the 100 fly, he blasted his way to victory in 49.61, edging out teammate Michael Daly while lowering his previous PB of 50.16 from last year.
Daly, who was 12th in the 400 IM at the 2021 NCAAs, had a win of his own in the 100 back (48.89), coming off a season-best performance of 47.49 against Virginia Tech last weekend.
Senior Jonah Cey joined Doyle as a double winner, coming out on top in the 1-meter (293.40) and 3-meter (350.40) diving events.
Schobel is quite the dual athlete!
