WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point swimming & diving team defended Crandall Pool on Friday night, sweeping Patriot League foe Lehigh in the Black Knights’ final dual of the 2021-22 campaign. The men’s team defeated the Mountain Hawks 194.5-94.5, while the women claimed a 190-109 margin of victory.

Throughout the course of the action, the Cadets claimed top finishes in 22 of 32 events. The men’s side posted 12 first-place performances and the women racked up 10. Aurelie Migault led the program with three first-place swims, as she touched the wall first in both the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke events and additionally picked up a win in the 200 Medley Relay.

Prior to the start of the meet, head coach Brandt Nigro and his staff honored the team’s 11-member senior class. Despite the effects of COVID-19, the group has racked up over 30 combined dual victories and seen numerous program records broken.

The Men’s Meet
For the second-straight outing, Army (6-3, 2-1 PL) used the early races to build its lead. After turning in the top two spots in the 200 Medley Relay, the Cadets went on to sweep both the 1000- and 200-yard freestyle, claiming 47 of the first 55 points available.

The Mountain Hawks battled back in the 100-yard backstroke, as Joe Huber tied for third with Johan Pretorius for the team’s highest finish of the opening events. Army’s breaststroke trio of Evan Yoo, Bruce Bannister and Nate Wilson then got the Cadets their third sweep with their performances in the 100-yard race.

After six events, Lehigh was finally able to claim its first victory of the night, as a 0.01-second differential put Glenn Lasco ahead of second-place Ian Shahan in the 50 Free. The win was one of the last that the Mountain Hawks earned, as Army went on to take the top three spots in two of the next five individual events, achieving the feat in the 200 Back and 200 Breast.

The duo of Isaac Newman and David Manelis led the Cadets in the diving event, as each of them finished the night with a triumph. Newman’s 328.35 earned him first place on the 3-meter board, while Manelis took home the 1M event with a mark of 371.85.

Army had only exhibition entries in the final two events of the evening, the 200 IM and the 400 Free Relay, which allowed its visitors to collect a free 31 points. With the result, the Black Knights improve to 48-0 all-time in duals with Lehigh.

The Women’s Meet
The Black Knights (4-6, 1-2 PL) started off the meet strong, taking the top two spots in the 200 Medley Relay to secure 15 early points. Though the Mountain Hawks responded with back-to-back wins, Lauren Carag got the team back on top when she took home the 100 Back by over a full second.

Following Carag’s performance, Army got a boost in scoring when the trio of Migault, Maggie McDonald and Sarah Platt swept the 100 Breast. Melinda Zhang and Erica Esterly also contributed to the momentum with first- and third-place swims in the 200 Fly.

Despite the push from the Black Knights, Lehigh kept the pressure on and took home both the 50- and 100-yard freestyle before Migault stopped the streak with her performance in the 200 Breast, marking her third victory of the night.

On the boards, the Cadets earned significant points from Minh DonnellAbigail Gibbs and Acacia Chai, who took the top three spots on both the 1- and 3-meter board. Donnell’s winning score of 293.55 stood as the most points of the day.

The teams traded wins down the stretch, with Lehigh taking the 500 Free and 400 Freestyle Relay and Army controlling the 100 Fly and 200 IM. The Mountain Hawks’ late victories made no difference, as the Black Knights went on to turn in their second-largest dual victory of the year.

Coach’s Corner
“Tonight was the perfect way to end our dual meet season. The night started with a special ceremony to recognize our Firsties and thank them for everything they done for this program over the years. To me especially, having the opportunity to send them out on a great note was very meaningful. From start to finish, we performed well both on the boards and in the pool. Our divers got it done, setting numerous personal bests and breaking several plebe records. Swimming-wise, we built off last week’s home meet and kept swimming fast and putting up in-season bests. We were able to mix up our line-up tonight and move people so they could get more experience in their secondary events, which is important as we head into the Patriot League Championships. Eighteen days to go and we are excited to get back in the pool tomorrow and keep working towards our goals.” – Head Coach Brandt Nigro
