USC Water Polo Holds Top Ranking In Women’s Week 2 CWPA Varsity Polls

BRIDGEPORT, Pa. — Defending National Champion the University of Southern California retains a razor thin lead over Stanford University to maintain status as the top-ranked team as the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) releases the 2022 Week 2/February 2 Women’s Varsity National Top 25, Division III Top 10, CWPA Top Five and CWPA Division III Top Five Polls.

Pomona-Pitzer Colleges, the University of Michigan and Austin College continue as the top-ranked teams in the Division III Top 10,  CWPA Top Five and CWPA Division III Top Five Polls two weeks into the 2022 campaign.

Voted on by a panel of coaches from the Western Water Polo Association (WWPA), the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF), the Golden Coast Conference, the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC), the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), the Big West Conference, the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) and the CWPA based on the cumulative results of the season, the polls are compiled and released on Wednesday during the season.

2022 WOMEN’S VARSITY NATIONAL TOP 25 (WEEK 2)

The University of Southern California continues as the No. 1 team in the nation as the Trojans lead the Week 2/February 2 National Top 25 Poll.

USC (98 points) leads Stanford University (97 points) by a single point as the Trojans hang on by slimmest of margins.  The University of California-Los Angeles (92 points) and the University of California (89 points) hang on at No. 3 and 4 ,respectively, as the Top Four teams in the land remain unchanged.

The University of Michigan (83 points) and the University of Hawaii (80 points) trade the No. 5 and 6 positions as the Wolverines crack the Top Five.  The ranking is one spot off the Maize & Blue’s all-time best mark of No. 4 achieved in the final 2016 poll.

The University of California-Irvine (77 points), Fresno State University (70 points) and Arizona State University (67 points) retain the No. 7-to-9 rankings with the University of California-Davis (63 points) entering the Top 10 in the final position.

The rankings continue to fluctuate as San Jose State University (60 points) moves up to No. 11, the University of California-San Diego (50 points) slips to No. 12, Long Beach State University (48 points) achieves sole possession of the No. 13 berth and Wagner College (44 points) moves up three places to No. 14.

University of the Pacific (36 points) and the University of California-Santa Barbara (36 points) rate in a tie at No. 15, while Long Island University (35 points) goes from unranked to No. 17 on the strength of a 14-9 defeat of then No. 10 Indiana University.

Indiana (33 points) slips into a three-way tie with Loyola Marymount University (33 points) and San Diego State University (33 points) at No. 18 to complete the Top 20.

Princeton University (25 points), Harvard University (21 points) and Marist College (10 points) all move back one spot to rate at No. 21-to-23 with Bucknell University (5 points) and California Baptist University (4 points) tying at No. 24 to wrap-up the Top 25.

2022 WOMEN’S VARSITY DIVISION III TOP 10 (WEEK 2)

Preseason favorite Pomona-Pitzer Colleges continues at No. 1 in the 2022 Women’s Varsity Division III Week 2/February 2 Top 10 Poll.

Pomona-Pitzer (99 points), California Lutheran University (96 points), Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges (87 points), Whittier College (82 points) and Chapman University (79 points) continue at No. 1-to-5 for another seven-day run, while the duo of the University of La Verne (73 points) and Austin College (73 points) move up to tie at No. 6.

The University of Redlands (68 points), Occidental College (61 points) and Macalester College (23 points) complete the Top 10.

Five-time defending Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Champion the University of Michigan continues at No. 1 in the 2022 CWPA Division I Week 2/February 2 Top Five Poll.

The 2005, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2021 league champion, Michigan (100 points) remains the undisputed/unanimous No. 1 selection.

Princeton University (94 points) and Harvard University (91 points) stay at No. 2 and 3 with Brown University (66 points) moving ahead of Bucknell University (50 points).

2021 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division III champion Austin College remains the top-ranked program in the 2022 CWPA Division III Week 2/February 2 Top Five Poll.

The ‘Roos (100 points) continue as a unanimous No. 1 pick following a 2021 season in which Austin downed Wittenberg University to claim the program’s inaugural league championship.

Wittenberg (94 points), Grove City College (87 points), Macalester College (70 points) and Penn State Behrend (49 points) complete the Top Five as the rankings remain unchanged from the preseason and Week 1 voting.
