2022 Women’s B1G Championships: Day 3 Ups/Mids/Downs

2022 B1G WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIPS

For those unfamiliar with swimming terminology, the concept of “Ups” and “Downs” is a good way to track which teams performed best at prelims. In prelims, swimmers qualify for one of three finals heats: the top 8 finishers make the A final, places 9 through 16 the B final and places 17 through 24 the C final. In finals, swimmers are locked into their respective final, meaning a swimmer in the B heat (spots 9-16) can only place as high as 9th or as low as 16th, even if they put up the fastest or slowest time of any heat in the final.

With that in mind, we’ll be tracking “Ups,” “Mids” and “Downs” after each prelims session. “Up” refers to swimmers in the A final, “Mid” to swimmers in the B final and “Down” to swimmers in the C final.

TEAM SCORES THRU DAY 2

  1. Ohio State – 425
  2. Michigan – 411.5
  3. Indiana – 405
  4. Wisconsin – 371
  5. Minnesota – 320.5
  6. Northwestern – 295
  7. Rutgers – 190
  8. Nebraska – 171
  9. Purdue – 160
  10. Penn State – 152
  11. Illinois – 105
  12. Iowa – 92

Ohio State, Michigan, and Indiana are all in a tight battle for the title so far. Wisconsin is not far behind as well. All four of the top teams placed at least six swimmers into A finals tonight.

Ohio State was dominant this morning though as they placed 10 swimmers into an A final. The Buckeyes also had exhibition swimmer Nyah Funderburke swim the top time in the 100 backstroke this morning, although she will not swim the event in finals. The Buckeyes are also projected to slightly expand their lead.

Wisconsin put the most swimmers into a single A final as they put four into the 100 back. Ohio State put 3 into the 100 fly, and Northwestern placed three in the 100 breast.

Northwestern also had an impressive morning as they look to overtake Minnesota for fifth place so far. Based on the scored prelims this morning, it looks as if the Wildcats will do so.

Note: Numbers will be updated as diving results become available
