2022 B1G WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIPS

Tonight finals for the individual 100 butterfly, 400 IM, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke, and 3 meter diving will take place. The 200 freestyle relay will also occur.
Based on this morning’s swims, it is projected that Ohio State will grow upon their slight lead. The battle between first may turn into the battle for second.
Michigan seniors Maggie MacNeil and Olivia Carter are the top two seeds tonight in the 100 butterfly. Michigan also holds the top seed in the 400 IM from sophomore Kathryn Ackermann.
Wisconsin placed the most swimmers of four into the A final of the 100 backstroke, and Ohio State (100 fly) and Northwestern (100 breast) each placed three swimmers into the A final.
Ohio State will attempt to continue their success in the relays as they have won three of three so far. They have the fastest seed time for the event in tonight’s final.
100 Butterfly
- Maggie MacNeil, (Mich) 49.74
- Olivia Carter, (Mich) 51.29
- Katherine Zenick, (OSU) 51.35
MacNeil defended her 100 butterfly B1G title tonight touching in a time of 49.74. She won the event last year in a time of 49.68. She also holds the meet record of 49.42 which she set in 2020. Tonight’s time was a season best for MacNeil as she went a 49.97 at midseason.
Teammate Olivia Carter touched second in 51.29. This was faster than last year as she went a 51.54 in finals last year. She also set a season best as her best time was a 51.54 from midseason.
Katherine Zenick moved up from fifth in the event last year to third this year as she finished in a time of 51.35. This was key as the team title between Michigan and Ohio State is close.
Northwestern’s Miriam Guevara touched fourth in a best time of 51.29. That also broke Northwestern’s school record which previously stood at 51.90.
400 IM
- Megan Van Berkom, (Minn) 4:03.45
- Kristen Romano, (OSU) 4:05.28
- Katherine Trace, (OSU) 4:06.79
Megan Van Berkom made a statement tonight moving up from seventh in the event last year (4:13.19) to winning the event tonight (4:03.45). She led the event right from the start as she split a 54.54 on the butterfly leg.
OSU picked up 55 points as Kristen Romano and Katherine Trace touched 2-3. Romano won the event last year in a time of 4:06.75 and Trace was second last year in 4:07.90. Both swam faster times tonight.
Top seed after prelims Kathryn Ackerman (Mich) finished fourth in a time of 4:07.46. Her she just off of her season best of 4:07.38 which she swam at midseason.
200 Freestyle
- Amy Fulmer (OSU), 1:43.73
- Anna Peplowski (Indiana), 1:43.92
- Lillie Hosack (Wisconsin), 1:44.13
Fulmer led from the start splitting a 50.29 at the 100 mark. Fulmer moved up from sixth in event last year in a time of 1:46.24 to winning the event in 1:43.73 this year.
Indiana freshman Anna Peplowski had the fastest split as she charged to the finish in a 26.65 to touch second in 1:43.92.
Wisconsin’s Lillie Hosack finished third for the second year in a row. Last year she touched in a 1:45.42 and this year she touched over a second faster in 1:44.13.
All top three swimmers this year were faster than last year’s winning time of 1:44.39.
100 Breaststroke
- Hannah Bach (OSU), 57.61
- Tara Vovk (Northwestern), 58.52
- Letitia Sim (Michigan), 58.76
OSU’s Hannah Bach got the win in the 100 breaststroke touching in 57.61. She defended her title in the event as she won it last year with a time of 58.29. Bach went out in a 26.90, the only sub-27 split of the field in the first 50.
Northwestern’s Tara Vovk moved up from 10th in the B final last year (1:00.52) to second here in 58.52. Teammate Sophie Angus who was second in the event last year touched fourth tonight in 58.78.
Michigan freshman Letitia Sim won third in a 58.76. Michigan did not score any points in the event last year so this helps Michigan’s points total as they contend for the team title.
100 Backstroke
- Phoebe Bacon (Wisconsin), 51.58
- Mackenzie McConagha (Wisconsin), 51.92
- Kacey McKenna (Indiana), 51.93
Phoebe Bacon pulled away with the win tonight in the 100 backstroke. She defended her title as she won in a 51.32 last year. She was just off of her season best of 51.38. Bacon had the fastest first 50 as she was out in a 24.92 which also was the only sub-25 split.
Teammate Mackenzie McConagha touched second in 51.92. She was just off of her prelims swim of 51.91, but both swims were faster than her previous season best of 52.60.
Indiana freshman Kacey McKenna went a huge personal best as she finished third in 51.93. Her previous best was a 52.57.
3 Meter Diving
- Sarah Bacon (Minnesota), 436.70
- Joy Zhu (Minnesota), 369.75
- Tarrin Gilliland (Indiana), 369.40
After placing sixth last year, Sarah Bacon won the 3 meter diving in commanding fashion. Teammate Joy Zhu finished second to score a total of 60 points for Minnesota.
Indiana went 3-5 in the event as Tarrin Gilliland was third and Anne Fowler was fifth.
200 Freestyle Relay
- Michigan, 1:26.74
- Ohio State, 1:27.19
- Minnesota, 1:27.92
Ohio State had won all three relays so far at the meet, but Michigan was able to come away with the win here in 1:26.74. The Wolverines had a key split from Maggie MacNeil as she anchored in 21.01. Ohio State’s Teresa Ivan anchored in 21.70. Michigan also broke the B1G meet record held by Michigan since 2019.
Minnesota was sixth in the event last year but moved up to third here tonight. They had a key split by anchor Maggie Summit as she split a 21.76.
