The Stanford grad (& former SwimMAC swimmer) has been on the edge, world-class for many years, but he’s never claimed the top US spot. With Godsoe’s 100 butterfly win at US World Trials, he will rep Team USA in the sprint butterfly and on the men’s 4×100 meter medley relay at the 2013 FINA World Championships in Barcelona, Spain.

Godsoe’s 51.66 100 buterfly is the 4th fastest time in the world so far. Godsoe’s been training with a post grad crew at Stanford helmed by Ted Knapp, Scott Armstrong and Tony Batis. Results have been great, and this postgrad group could see its numbers swell in the near future.

Many thanks to SwimSwam contributor and swimming photo artist Tim Binning of the swim pictures for capturing these images.

So one of former NCAA greats have had breakthrough in the long pool, when will Tom Shields do the same?

Next summer, after a full year of being free to train more long course, and to rest on his own time without the worry of schooling, I think shields could crack 51 at pan pacs. Honestly I’d like to see if he could make a relay spot in the 100 or 200 free, because that 1:33 he went senior year of high school with full time long course training ought to get him around 1:47ish. I think a low 51-high 50 is possible, along with a 1:55 200 fly and 48mid/1:47low frees by next summer.

Ive been a competitor and teammate of Eugene for a long time. This swim was not a surprise to anyone who knows the kind of racer he is. Congrats to him and cant wait to see what he does in Barcelona.

One of the major surprises seen at Trials ! very good for him to make worlds team . As RAGNAR said , excited to see him on individual and medley relay races . It’s gonna rock solid with new contenders this year .

This guy really deserves more credit for his win, not only did he beat a abnormally rested ryan lochte, but his time had have gotten him 4th in finals at London. Excited to see the relay!
