Turkish teen Atakan Malgil posted another national age group record, continuing his tear across the men’s 400m IM history books for his nation.

While competing on the first day of the 2022 Turkish National Team Trials in Edirne earlier this month, the 17-year-old posted a time of 4:24.37 to take the men’s 400m IM title.  Splitting 59.26/1:08.47/1:19.99/5965, Malgil logged a huge new lifetime best en route to this record.

Entering these Trials, Malgil’s career-quickest rested at the 4:28.57 from April of 2021. As such, with his gold medal-garnering swim, Malgil hacked over 4 seconds off of that mark to capture the men’s 17-18 Turkish national age group record. The previous record stood at 4:24.61 from Batuhan Hakan in 2016.

Additional top performances on the men’s side include Batuhan Filiz sweeping the men’s 400m, 800m and 1500m freestyle events in respective efforts of 3:50.53, 7:55.57 and 15:27.80. Berkay Oegretir also got on the board with a gold in the 100m breaststroke, notching 1:00.71 for the victory.

Top women’s performances included Defne Coskun‘s 2:27.33 time in the 200m breast, while Ekaterina Avramova scored the 50m/100m back double with times of 29.04 and 1:02.12, respectively.
