Delaney Burns Stay In-State, Signs with Penn State for the Fall of 2022

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Electing to make a short two and a half hour drive to continue her college swimming career, Delaney Burns of Berwyn, Pennsylvania has announced that she will be staying in-state this fall, commmitting to swim at Penn State University. Burns is currently finishing up her senior year at Conestoga High School and does her club swimming with the Upper Main Line YMCA.

“I am so excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at Penn State University! I’d like to thank my family, coaches, and friends for supporting me through this whole process. WE ARE!! 🦁🦁”
Earlier this month, Burns finished up her high school swimming career at the PIAA Girls 3A Swimming and Diving State Championships, earning seconds swims in both of her events. Her top swim came in the 500 free, where she dropped nearly seven seconds from her prelims swim to finish at the top of the B-final in ninth with a time of 4:55.75. That time marked a new personal best and would have been good enough to take fifth in the A-final. She also added a 13th place finish in the 200 free (1:53.53) and led off Conestoga’s 400 free relay in 52.57 to help her team to a third place finish.
Swimming for Upper Main Line, she was a three event finalist last summer at the YMCA Long Course Swimming Festival. There, she too 10th in the 400 free (4:31.95), 11th in the 200 free (2:08.05), and 23rd in the 200 fly (2:27.46).

  • 100 free – 52.57
  • 200 free – 1:52.59
  • 500 free – 4:55.75
  • 1000 free – 10:20.23
  • 100 fly – 56.77
  • 200 fly – 2:05.43

The Nittany Lion women are coming off a 10th place finish at the 2022 Big-10 Championships. The program was led at that meet by senior backstroke ace Marie Schobel, who qualified for the A-final of both the 100 and 200 backstrokes. In the 500 free, the team was led by another senior, Madison Murtagh. Murtagh was the program’s only finalist in the event, taking 22nd in 4:48.35.

When she arrives on campus this fall, Burns will have the potential to make a big impact on the Nittany Lion team, especially in the 500. Outside of Murtagh, Burns’ lifetime best in the 500 would have been the program’s fastest last season by half a second. She will also bolster the team’s depth in the 200 free and both butterfly events.

Burns will joined in the freshman class this fall by Krista Marlin, Nya Robinson, Julia Meisner, Catherine Meisner, and Morgan Bagnall. She will likely spend her collegiate career competing with Bagnall, who also specializes in the distance freestyle events. Bagnall holds a slight edge in the 500 entering college, having already been 4:53.78 in the event.
