15-Year-Old Lorenzo Galossi Shatters Italian Jr. Record in the 800m Freestyle

2022 ITALIAN SPRING CHAMPIONSHIPS

Continuing his dominant meet at the Italian Spring Championships, 15-year-old Lorenzo Galossi set a new Italian Junior Record in the 800m Freestyle en route to a 4th place finish.

Galossi’s time of 7:49.76 shattered the previous mark. In addition, his time now stands within reach of the European Junior Record of 7:45.92 held by Franko Grgic. The World Junior Record stands at 7:45.67, which is a target time set by FINA when World Junior Records started being recognized in 2014.

Notably, Galossi negative-split his race, opening the first 400 meters in 3:56.02 and closing in 3:53.74 over the final 400 meters. This included a final split of 26.86, which was a second faster than anyone else in the field. Otherwise, Falossi was under 30 seconds on every split except for one, where he was a 30.04 at the 350m mark.

Galossi’s newest record builds upon a successful weekend for the teen, who also shattered the European Junior Record in the 400 freestyle to finish second in the event with a time of 3:45.93. His time in that event ranks him 3rd in the world for 2022, only behind fellow Italian Marco De Tullio and German Lukas Martens. Galossi first turned heads late last month when he swam a 3:39.90 in the SCM 400m freestyle to break the Italian Age Group Record in the event.  In addition, he hit a personal best of 1:45.02 in the 200 freestyle at the same meet, an event that he will contest the LCM version later this week.
