Gemmell Already Crowned Champion – Team USA Swimming Open Water Update

The 5K doesn’t take place until Saturday, but Andrew Gemmell already has a big win under his belt – a gold in the traditional national team pictionary contest.  The open water swimmers are now in Barcelona and it sounds like there’s a lot to look forward to once the competitions begin. Today Gemmell gives us an update:

Hola from Barcelona!

Today marked our first full day in Barcelona as we gear up for World Championships. The team traveled to the race course for the first time and everyone was excited to finally see what the conditions will be like. The course looks to be fast, with calm water and temperatures in the mid 70s. The trip to the venue also afforded us a chance to see some of Barcelona, which is a beautiful city filled with fantastic architecture and history.

The other big event of the day was the annual pictionary contest between the staff and the swimmers. The game has become a tradition on open water trips, and the team gets very into it, even though the coaches have (still!) never won. I think the coaches were actually stressed out more over pictionary than our up coming races. But no one can ever accuse the open water team of not having fun!

Only one more day until the 5k races kick off and team USA is ready to go!

– Andrew (pictionary team champion)
