Scottsdale Aquatic Club Breaks Three National Age Group Records on Thursday

Swimming at the postcard-worthy Mt. Hood Aquatics Center in Gresham, Oregon, the 15-18 boys from the Scottsdale Aquatic Club broke a pair of National Age Group Records at the Western Long Course Sectional meet on Thursday evening.

First went the 200 free relay records for the girls, where the team of Victoria Toris, Sam Fazio, Hannah Holman, and Amy Bilquist broke both the 15-16 and 15-18 records when they swam a 1:44.53. That easily took out the old record of 1:46.41 set by Tess Behrens, Rachel Bootsma, and the Aquajets of suburban Minneapolis in 2009 for the 15-16’s, and a 1:44.65 done by Maddy Schaefer, Jasmine Tosky, Rachael Acker, and Camille Cheng of PASA in 2010 for the 15-18 age group.

Fazio (16) – 26.19
Holman (16) – 26.49
Bilquist (15) – 25.30

What’s really scary about this relay is just how young they are – all of the swimmers have a few more years in the program, and they’re already going insanely-fast times, including that scorching anchor by Bilquist that should put her on the national radar in a big way.

Not too long after, the Scottsdale Aquatics boys broke the 15-18 National Age Group Record in the same relay with a 1:33.75. The foursome of Ryan Hoffer, Nick Magana, Connor Stirling, and Brad Dorsey combined for a 1:33.75, which breaks the old 2008 record belonging to a Redlands Swim Team relay that included future Auburn All-American Karl Krug along with teammates Joseph Hale, Tyler Harp, and Michael Perry.

Magana (17) – 23.02
Stirling (16) – 23.25
Dorsey (18) – 23.69

Note that all four of these swimmers return as well, as Dorsey is just on the old end of his grade and will still be a senior next year, as will Magana.

The youngest of the group is Hoffer, who has recently aged-up after breaking several 13-14 National Age Group Records.

Over the last two-plus seasons, Kevin Zacher and his staff in Scotsdale have really hit a stride in coaching young sprinters as their club has risen to national prominence at the age group and high school levels.
