Liam Egan Breaks 35-Year Old Bobby Hackett New England Swimming LSC Record

Just as the dust settled from Julia Roy breaking a 36-year old Kentucky State Record on Saturday, Liam Egan of Crimson Aquatics broke a historical record of his own. At the New England Swimming LSC Senior Championships, Egan broke the New England Swimming Open Record in the 15-18 400 free with a 3:56.64.

That took down a record set by another candidate for the Mount Rushmore of swimming: Bobby Hackett. He was a 3:58.78 in July of 1978.

Hackett was the 1976 Olympic silver medalist in the 1500 free. The reason why this record is really notable is that Hackett won his Olympic silver medal when he was classified as a 15-18 (he was 16) and also broke a World Record in the 800 free.

This tied 4 other swims (from the same month in 1978) as the oldest record in New England Swimming.

Egan is entering his senior year of high school, and counts himself among the top distance recruits in the country in the class of 2014.

Max Miranda goes a 16:38.53 (converts to a 16:06.44 SCY) in the 1500, placing 5th and ranking him 5th in the country for 13’s and 17th for 13-14’s. (On Friday, Miranda broke Ian Crocker’s 13-14 100 Fly record with a 59.45).

Max only joined Bluefish this year. He wasn’t originally from their.

Miranda swam with Kent County YMCA (KCY) from 2010-2012, and then transitioned to Bluefish during the middle of the short course season of this year. I swam at a meet against him in the fall and that was when he was Unattached-Bluefish (UN-ABF) during his transition period for competition.

It looks like Chuck Batchelor has fund another great young talent with Max Miranda! 2.07.11 in the 200 fly for a 13-year-old guy is very impressive. He still has a big work to do if he wants to break the 13/14 NAG record of 1.59.02 by Mr Phelps, but why not?

Liam swims at the Boston location. The head coach/director is Tim Murphy (who also coaches Harvard).

I may have missed it, but I didn’t see what the Hackett standard was, only that it was broken. The meet results were already updated with the new record so I still don’t know what Hackett’s time was that was broken.

Hackett’s record was 3:58 (and it was NE 15-18 record not an open record which is still held by Sam Wollner who then swam for Harvard)……note this is the NE 15-18 record not the NE-Resident 15-18 record which is still held by Eric Vendt at 3:51. Hackett’s was set in 1978 and Vendt in 1998.
NE Record are swims in NE LSC meets while NE Resident records are swims by NE-LSC registered swimmers outside of NE….the latter are almost always faster in the older age group since they are generally done shaved/tapered at National/International meet.
Nice swim by Liam though he’s been faster (3:55 at Seniors) and I wonder if he is not targeting another meet later this… Read more »

My mistake….I meant Junior World team…….I believe that the selections will be finalized end of this summer based on best times at Senior, Junior and maybe Open(??) meets. Liam is currently first for 1500 and in contention for 400. Also from New England Ryan Harty (did not swim at NE Senior) and Connor Green are in contention on the men’s side.

When reporting these record breaking performances, it would be appropriate to recognize their coach of record. It seems that your emphasis of performance is in relation to collegiate swimming for high school swimmers. I’d like to know who their present club coach is – not necessarily what collegiate program is going to benefit from the work the club coach has put forth to get the swimmer to the present level.
