Jack Conger took on a new event at this weekend’s Potomac Valley Swimming LSC Senior Championships, breaking the LSC’s open record.
Competing only Sunday at the University of Maryland, Conger swam only this 200 fly with a 1:58.28 and added a 51.14 on Machine Aquatics’ 400 free relay, but that was enough to leave quite an impression.
That time ranks him as the 8th-best American this year, as it continues to look like Conger’s future could be as much in the butterfly races as it is in the backstroke races where he’s made such an impression to this period in his career. Further, it continues to make Conger look like the most versatile swimmer in his generation.
He is entered in this race at the NCSA Junior National Championships next week.
And wrapping up a wild weekend of swimming action across Sectional meets and senior State Championships, another very old record went down at the New England LSC championship. There, Connor Green on Sunday broke a New England territory record in the 200 backstroke for 17-18’s (aka, the fastest 200 meter backstroke swum within the boundaries of the LSC) for 17-18’s with a 2:01.52. That went under the mark set by Rick Carey in July of 1978 at 2:04.46. Carey would go on to break the World Record and win Olympic gold in 1984 in this event.
His swim also went under the open record, which is much younger, having been set last year by Pat Myers.

Since I’ve never heard anything about an IM time for him, can I assume his one weakness is breaststroke?

How good is his freestyle?
49.44 in the 100 free at the last US championships. The 200 will probably be his best event on freestyle. I talk about long course.
He owns the national high school record in the 500 free, so pretty good!
Fortunately, PsychoDad will be teaching Conger a less-like-Soni, even-less-like-Cordes breaststroke technique at Texas this Fall.
I am busy teaching my kids :). But, since Eddie teaches breaststroke the way it is supposed to be swam (and I strictly follow Eddie teachings), he is in good hands.

Worth noting that conger’s time would have been 5th at trials as well as world university games (he did not compete in 2 fly in either)… Kid keeps getting better and better proving his ability across many events
