Leah Hayes broke her own 15-16 National Age Group (NAG) record this morning in the long course meter (LCM) 200 IM swimming a 2:09.81 to best her previous record of 2:09.99.
This morning’s swim was also a best time for the 16-year-old Hayes. Hayes now has gone under 2:10 twice, a feat no other woman has done so young.

Based on her splits above, the biggest difference between this morning’s swim and her swim at World Trials in April was her back half. Hayes had perfectly identical backstroke splits, but both her breaststroke and freestyle splits were over a tenth faster. Notably, Hayes has finished second overall behind fellow American Alex Walsh in both races. Both Walsh and Hayes are the top two seeds heading into tonight’s semifinal.
This morning’s swim moves Hayes up from 14th to 13th all-time as she surpassed Ella Eastin who swam a 2:09.90 at the 2018 Pan Pac Championships. Hayes creeps closer and closer to becoming the fastest 18 & under in the event ever as that mark stands at 2:09.01 done by Alex Walsh at age 18 in 2020. In addition to her 15-16 NAG record in the event, Hayes was third in the event in both the 11-12 and 13-14 age groups.

Great to see swimmer from Illinois do so well. My children were age groupers in th Fox Vallety in the 70’s and 80’s, not a hot bed of swimming by any means. Very excited for her.
