After breaking his own South American and national record in prelims on Day 1 of the 2022 World Swimming Championships, Brazil’s Guilherme Costa swam 3:43.31 in finals to break those records again. That swim lowers the mark by more than a second, improving on the 3:44.52 he swam in the heats to qualify for the final. In addition to rebreaking his record, Costa snagged bronze, improving on his 11th place from Tokyo.

As you can see from the split comparisons, Costa was much faster over the last 100 in the Budapest final than he was for either of his two other records. In fact, that’s where he found all of the time to reset the record from the prelims, as in the morning he was faster over the first 300.
At the 2019 World Championships, Costa placed 21st in the 800 free in 7:58.67 and 25th in the 1500 freestyle in 15:20.73. He holds the Brazilian and South American records in the 400 (3:43.31), 800 (7:46.09), and 1500 (14:55.49) freestyles.
In addition to the 400 free, Costa is slated to race both the 800 and 1500 at 2022 Worlds. Given his start on Day 1, it’s fair to put South American records in the 800 and 1500 free on notice.
