In the prelims of the men’s 50 breast at the 2022 World Championships, eight swimmers were disqualified from the race. And while DQs usually happen more often in the breaststrokes than in other events, the number of swimmers DQed in the the men’s 50 breast prelims was significantly higher than it was at 2019 World Championships, where only one person got DQed in the same event.
Three of the DQs on Monday in this event came from swimmers in circle-seeded heats. Those swimmers were 30th-seeded Lyubomir Epitroppov of Bulgaria, 29th-seeded James Dergousoff of Canada, and 26th-seeded Julio Horrego Valle of Honduras.
Athletes DQed, Men’s 50 Breast Prelims, 2022:
- Zandanbal Gunsennorov (MGL)
- Higinio Obama Nkara (GEQ)
- Filipe Gomes (MAW)
- Ja Calero Suarez (CUB)
- J. Asdad Fenelus (HAI)
- Lyubomir Epitropov (BUL)
- Julio Horrego Valle (HON)
- James Dergousoff (CAN)
Athletes DQed, Men’s 50 Breast Prelims, 2019:
- Kumaren Naidu (ZAM)
Similarly, at the 2021 Short Course World Championships, there was also an astonishingly large amount of DQs in the breaststroke events. In the opening session of that meet, seven swimmers were DQed in the women’s 100 breast while eight were DQed in the men’s 50 breast. All of the DQs from that competition were calls made based on underwater camera footage of swimmers, which can be used by officials to initiate stroke infractions. The use of underwater cameras at the Olympics and World Championship meets was approved by FINA in 2020.
The most notable DQ from the 2022 World Championships so far is Annie Lazor‘s DQ in the women’s 100 breast from yesterday. Lazor was disqualified for “leg movements not simultaneous or alternating movement”, although the disqualification is currently under a protest from USA Swimming that will be considered by the FINA Court of Appeals Monday morning.
Dolphin kicks at the beginning and end of the race
Ridiculous.
I know right? The rule has been in place for almost 20 years and people are still taking too many dolphin kicks!
Would love to know the reason for each DQ. Please post, when available.
If the best swimmers in the world are getting DQ’d at this rate, it seems like something needs to change.
Maybe…follow the rules? These are cases of them always getting away with breaking them (in many cases, knowingly)…until they can’t.
Yes, the “best swimmers in the world” should swim breaststroke instead of butterfly.
yeah, Officials need to actually watch these at lower meets to end the cheating… it’s easy to see if you’re watching
My thoughts exactly.
List is not accurate. At least one person is a scratch due to covid.
Official results have eight DSQs listed (along with no-swims): https://www.omegatiming.com/File/00011700000103EB0101FFFFFFFFFF01.pdf
