Carter and Schreuders Tie For 11th, Break National Records In 100 Free Prelims

A trio of Caribbean records during the men’s 100 freestyle prelims, courtesy of Mikel Schreuders, Dylan Carter, and Jordan Crooks. Schreuders and Carter tied for 11th in the heats with a 48.40 and Crooks tied for 21st with a 48.79.

For Schreuders, that’s an improvement upon his own Aruban record of 49.08 from back in 2019 at the Pan American Games. Schreuders swam that 49.08 in the prelims of the Pam Am Games and followed that with a 49.21 in the final for 6th.

He will advance tired for 11th with Dylan Carter, who broke his own Trinidad & Tobago national record of 48.52. Carter’s previous national record in this event comes from the semi-finals round of the event at the 2019 World Championships. This is Carter’s second national record of the meet so far following the 22.85 record that he pulled off earlier on, which resulted in a 4th place finish.

Carter and Schreuders both swam this event at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and their 11th place finish in the prelims marks an improvement upon both of their performances. In Tokyo, Carter swam a 48.66 for 22nd while Schreuders tied for 30th with a 49.31.

Jordan Crooks wasn’t present at the Olympics but swam in Budapest, posting a 48.79 Cayman Islands record. As opposed to the other 2019 records that were broken by Schreuders and Carter, Crooks broke a record here that was more than a decade old.

Crooks undercut the 48.47 national record that the Cayman Islands’ Shaune Fraser established back in 2009 at the World Championships. Crooks now holds 2 national records, having set the 50 back record with a 26.94 in 2021.

Crooks just wrapped up his freshman season at the University of Tennessee where he collected a bronze medal in the 50 free, silver in the 100 free, and bronze in the 100 butterfly at the 2022 SEC Championships. He was named the NCAA Breakout Swimmer of the Year for the 2022 Swammy Awards.
