Washington & Jefferson Men’s Water Polo Drop Pair of Matches At W&J Invitational

WASHINGTON, Pa. — The Washington & Jefferson College men’s water polo team dropped a pair of matches Sunday at the W&J Invitational at Henry Memorial Natatorium. The Presidents fell by an 11-6 score to Johns Hopkins before suffering an 18-8 setback to the University of Toronto.

Johns Hopkins scored four of the five first quarter goals to stake themselves to an early lead. The lone W&J score in the first quarter came from Aidan Miller (Grove City, Ohio / St. Charles Prep). The Blue Jays stretched their lead to 8-3 at halftime.

The Presidents second quarter scores came from Chris Edwards (Bexley, Ohio/St. Charles Prep) and Aidan Johnson (Nassau, Bahamas / Windsor). Both teams scored three goals in the second half. W&J had single scoring tallies from Mitchell Rubio (Wexford, Pa. / North Allegheny), Kailer Spicer (East Lansing, Mich. / East Lansing) and Andrew Edwards (Bexley, Ohio/St. Charles Prep).

Isaac Kay (Aptos, Calif. / Santa Cruz) made the start in goal and tallied eight saves in the loss.

Toronto 18, W&J 8

Toronto took an early lead and methodically build upon it as the match wore on for an 18-8 victory. Toronto led 4-2 after the first quarter before seeing its lead double to 8-4 by halftime. The visitors then outscored the Presidents by a 10-4 margin in the second half.

Andrew Edwards paced the Presidents’ efforts with three goals. Spicer and Ryan Bannon (Broomfield, Colo. / Broomfield) recorded two goals apiece. Caine Dusza (Souderton, Pa. / Souderton) got the start and made three saves. Kay relived Dusza and made three saves as well.

W&J travels to Austin College to compete next weekend. They face Connecticut College and Penn State Behrend on Sept. 17 before taking on Augustana and Austin on Sept. 18.
