It’s day 7 at the swimming portion of the 2013 FINA World Championships in Barcelona, Spain, and it’s time to start tying up some loose ends. There’s another 5 finals Saturday, but only three semi-finals to go with them.

As a reminder, here’s all the links you need to follow tonight’s action at the World Championships.
The story is all going to be about the women’s 800 free, where everyone around sees no way that either Katie Ledecky, Lotte Friis, or both come up short of the World Record.
The two will be head-to-head in lane 4 (Ledecky) and lane 3 (Friis), after going in the low 8:20’s in prelims on Friday, but also right there witht hem will be New Zealand’s Lauren Boyle, who was the 2nd-best in prelims with an 8:21.00 in a new Oceania Record, and was the 4th-fastest in history in that 1500 battle.
And keep in mind that this final will also feature Spain’s Mireia Belmonte-Garcia, who was the silver medalist in this event at last year’s Olympics.
The focus will all be on those middle two lanes, but there is plenty of quality to go around in this race.
That’s one of two World Record opportunities in the session, with the other coming in the women’s 50 breaststroke. In prelims of that race, Russia’s Yulia Efimova broke the record in 29.78, but with her and Lithuanian Ruta Meilutyte both swimming so well at this meet, it’s hard to see only .02 going off of that record. Meilutyte, for example, was only 30.07 in prelims: slower than she started her 100 breaststroke.
Jessica Hardy also is in the hunt to reclaim the record that she lost on Saturday morning, having gone 29.99 in prelims. These are the only three women to ever go under 30 seconds in this race.
Other interesting stories on the day include watching to see if Ryan Lochte can recover from that triple that he did on Friday (and did very well) in the men’s 100 fly final, and watching the disgusting men’s 50 free final that was deep enough even to make the participants say “wow”.
