ATHENS, Ga. – Following a successful opening weekend, the University of Georgia men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams return to the water this week as they travel to Atlanta to face rival Georgia Tech Wednesday at 3 p.m. at the McAuley Aquatic Center.
For the Georgia women’s team, this is the 15th all-time meeting with the Bulldogs holding a 13-1 advantage, while Wednesday will mark the 87th meeting for the men’s team, a series led 65-21 by Georgia. The two schools last met in a dual meet during the 2017-18 season, when Georgia swept a pair of duals in Athens.
The Yellow Jackets are led by head coach Courtney Shealy Hart, an Olympic gold medalist and NCAA champion for Georgia. Hart is joined on her coaching staff by fellow Bulldog legends Melanie Margalis and Michael Norment, with the trio combining for 61 All-America citations during their UGA careers.
Wednesday’s meet will be contested in a short-course meters format at Georgia Tech’s Olympic pool. Live coverage of the meet will be available on ACC Network Extra, a streaming service available to ACC Network cable subscribers. The Georgia women (3-0, 1-0 SEC) started the Stefanie Williams Moreno era with three dual victories against Arizona State and Missouri. The Bulldogs took every individual swimming event in the double dual against the Sun Devils and Tigers, while junior Meghan Wenzel earned SEC Diver of the Week honors with a pair of Zone cuts. Sophomore Abby McCulloh posted the second-fastest 1,000 freestyle time in the nation, along with the No. 5 500 freestyle time, while graduate Marie Schobel (200 backstroke) and junior Sloane Reinstein (200 freestyle) also rank in the national top five.
Despite a close loss to Arizona State in dual competition, the Georgia men (2-1, 1-0 SEC) began the tenure of head coach Neil Versfeld with impressive performances, posting 12 top-10 national times. The backstroke group was especially strong with five B-cuts, including two apiece from seniors Ian Grum and Bradley Dunham. Junior Luca Urlando ranks third in the 200 butterfly, while fellow junior Jake Magahey stands fifth in the 200 freestyle. Urlando, Dunham, and Magahey joined senior Dillon Downing in dropping the second-fastest 400 freestyle relay in the nation. At the diving well, graduate Kevin Li and sophomore Nolan Lewis earned three combined Zone cuts.
Following Wednesday’s meet, the Georgia swimming and diving teams will travel to Tallahassee to face Florida State on Saturday, Oct. 22 at 10 a.m.
