Michigan State Hires Former Buckeye Hulme As New Assistant

Michigan State has hired Michael Hulme as their new assistant coach, six weeks after Tim Loeffler left to take a similar position at Army, the school announced today.

This is Hulme’s third collegiate coaching position in three years since graduating from Ohio State in 2011. He spent one year with the Purdue women, where three women qualified for NCAA’s; and then spent one year at Denver, where they sent two swimmers to NCAA’s and broke 16 school records.

Hulme’s highest accomplishments as a swimmer includes a 27th place finish in the 400 IM at the 2008 Olympic Trials, and as a member of the 2010 Big Ten Championship squad as a junior.

His success with two women’s programs could be vital to the continued growth at Michigan State. They’ve had some recent accolades with All-American Jacob Jarzen (who completed his eligibility last year), but the Michigan State women haven’t had an All-American swimmer since Jami Archambault in 1997, and they finished tied-for-last at the Big Ten Championships last year with Illinois. The Spartan women graduate 6 from last year’s team.

Those women will get some good early challenges with tri meets against Iowa and Northern Iowa, and then a quick turnaround against the aforementioned Illini and Liberty. The men won’t begin their intercollegiate schedule until two weeks later on the road against Grand Valley State.

Matt Gionidas’ Michigan State men only graduate three from the 2012-2013 team. They were also last (10th in this case) at the Big Ten Championships, and will struggle to replace Jacob Jarzen. They showed a little more fight at the end of the year, though; the men broke 7 school records at Big Tens.
