Kyle Chalmers Previews Sprint Battle Between Himself, Popovici, & Dressel

2022 FINA WORLD CUP – TORONTO

Reported by Sophie Kaufman.

MEN’S 50 FREE – FINALS

  • World Record: 20.16, Caeleb Dressel (USA) – 2020
  • World Junior Record: 20.98, Kenzo Simons (NED) – 2019
  • World Cup Record: 20.48, Vladimir Morozov (RUS) – 2018

PODIUM:

  1. Dylan Carter (TTO) – 20.91
  2. Brooks Curry (USA) – 21.07
  3. Kyle Chalmers (AUS) – 21.10

In Berlin, Dylan Carter spoke about how missing podiums served as huge motivation for him to keep training. It paid off for him in Berlin, and so far it’s still paying off for him in Toronto, as he took the win once again in the men’s 50 freestyle. He was slightly off the Trinidad and Tobago record of 20.71 that he set last weekend. That said, 20.91 was more than enough to get the job done here as he was the only man to break 21 seconds.

Like his LSU teammate MacNeil, Brooks Curry also had a quick turnaround from yesterday’s dual meet. He surged over the second 25, getting his hand on the wall second in 21.07. That lowers his best time from the 21.35 that he swam in prelims. It was very tight in the middle of the pool as the field came to the wall, and after Curry it was Chalmers in 21.10, just .03 seconds behind the American.

If he gets 18 months injury free and the media leave him alone my moneys on Chalmers if he can do 47.06 without a good training base or injured then he’s got more time to drop just remains if he can get himself there fit, healthy and ready to go. Otherwise Popovici. Dressel may medal but he’s not getting gold.

Kyle also set his world record with no “big boys” beside him so…

I mean, I think he’s trying to sell that Paris race and he’s right in doing so. But he needs to up his game and to detiver. Unless he or dressel can pull a 46 or consistent 47 lows until then, popovici is the clear favourite

Popovici will deliver as always.

I think Kyle and Caeleb definitely have the experience factor over David, a lot can happen in 2 yrs

Yeah. Popovici is amazing but he set his WR in a pool where he wasn’t competing with the big guys.

From memory, he’s never beaten Kyle or Caeleb in a race has he?

Can’t wait to see how it plays out.

Bro we he went 46.8-47.1 like 6 times last summer, some of which were at worlds and euros, he clearly can race the big guys.

It’s Popovici’s pool now, they’re just swimming in it
