Colgate Women, Binghamton Victorious In Dual Meet Split

HAMILTON – Colgate men’s and women’s swimming and diving complete their first dual meet of the 2022-23 season. The women’s team beat the Bearcats 168-131 to break a five-game skid against Binghamton.

The women’s squad won 10 events, while the men won two for the Raiders.

Right out the gate, Colgate won the 400-yard medley relay with a time of 3:56.90, beating the closest group by almost three seconds. Brooke GarretsonRegan HauAudrey Collins, and Elke Ambach made up the winning medley.

The men came in second for the first event of the meet. Matt FreundJack LiraRyan Jee, and Matthew Szypula finished the 400-yard medley relay in 3:30.97 minutes, just a second short of the winning team. The quartet beat Colgate’s current freshman medley record by four seconds.

Sophomore Nora Bergstrom won the first individual event of the meet, winning the 1,000-yard relay with a time of 10:45.12, almost 14-seconds faster than the nearest swimmer.

Peyton Wray placed second in the men’s first individual event, completing the 1,000-yard relay at 10:16.92.

Three Raiders claimed the top-two spots of the 200-yard free, with junior Zoe Stokes winning the event with a final time of 1:57.75. Ambach was right behind her, coming in at 1:58.73. On the men’s side, freshman Syzpula placed second, ending with a time of 1:46.38.

Keeping the hot streak alive, Jee won the 100-yard back for the men, finishing the event at 53.36 seconds, a whole second faster than the nearest Bearcat. For the women, Ferguson placed second at 59.57 seconds, nearly nabbing the win by half a second.

Freshman Hau, highlighted the 100-yard breast for Colgate, placing second at 1:06.47.

Colgate crushed the 200-yard fly, grabbing the top four places. Sophomore Emma Senglaub won the event at 2:09.35, followed by freshman Addisyn Donfris at 2:10.44, senior Katie Hand at 2:15.25, and fellow sophomore Katie Senglaub at 2:15.91.

The Raiders stayed on a roll, taking first and second place in the 50-yard free. First-year Elizabeth Rainey nabbed first with 25.17 seconds, while fellow teammate Jordan Hurt was just behind her with 25.22 seconds. Jee grabbed his second first place of the night, coming in at 22.03 seconds.

Rainey grabbed her second consecutive first-place finish winning the 100-yard free at 54.74 seconds.

In the 19th event, Donfris placed second in the 200-yard back with 2:09.77.

In the final stretch of the meet, Colgate dominated the 500-yard free and 100-yard fly. Bergstrom earned her second first place of the night with 5:12.66, and sophomore Dana Witte followed at 5:17.52 in the 500. Senglaub grabbed another first-place finish at 59 seconds on the dot in the 100. Freshman Alyssa Dennis earned second place with 59.74 seconds.

In the Raiders’ final two wins of the event, Collins claimed the 200-yard IM with 2:06.97. Taking the second medley of the event, Garretson, Rainey, sophomore Danielle McNerney, and junior Alexandra Mehos came in at a final time of 3:39.46.

The Raiders hit the pool tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 29, for the first Patriot League matchup of the season. Lafayette comes to Hamilton for a 1 p.m. start time in Lineberry Natatorium.

HAMILTON, N.Y. – Binghamton posted five double-event winners, highlighting its swimming & diving dual meet at Colgate on Friday evening. The Bearcat men defeated the host Raiders 229-61 while the women lost 168-131.

On the men’s side, sophomore Elijah Lanfear swept the 100 fly (49.62) and 200 fly (1:57.31) and was part of both first-place relays. The 400 medley relay team also included juniors Jake VecchioXiaoyu Lin and Travis Phillips and clocked a time of 3:29.15. The 400 free relay quartet, which also included senior Ryan Maierle as well as juniors Henry Shemet and Liam Murphy recorded a time of 3:06.20.

The two other men’s double winners were freshman Liam Preston in the 200 free (1:42.72) and 200 back (1:57.46) and senior Ryan Cohn in both the one-meter diving event (278.38) and three-meter competition (258.90). For the season, Cohn has now won five of the six diving events he has entered.

There were six other individual winners on the men’s side for Binghamton. They included senior Zachary Ciriaco (1000 free – 10:16.49), junior George Kipshidze (100 free – 47.92), junior Eric Kroon (100 breast – 58.46), senior Matthew Palguta (500 free – 4:59.12), senior Justin Meyn (200 IM – 1:58.88) and Lin (200 breast – 2:15.33).

Junior Courtney Moane and freshman Elizabeth Tirado were the Bearcats’ double-event winners on the women’s side. Moane swept the 100 breast (1:06.27) and the 200 breast (2:26.08) while Tirado captured the one-meter diving event (217.80) and the three-meter competition (207.08).

Other winners on the women’s side included freshman Olivia Philbrick in the 100 back (59.30) and fellow freshman Celia Webster in the 200 back (2:08.72).

Binghamton returns home to face Bryant on Saturday at 11 a.m.
