The Auburn men’s and women’s swimming & diving program traveled to the Louisiana State University Natatorium in Baton Rouge for a dual meet last Thursday. Auburn won a decisive sweep over LSU, with the women’s team coming out on top 179-121 and the Tiger men prevailing 208-92.
Though Auburn took the victory, LSU’s graduate student Maggie MacNeil and senior Brooks Curry more impressively geared themselves up for more racing at the FINA World Cup (short course meters) in Toronto last weekend.
At the dual meet, MacNeil won the 100 back (52.65), 50 free (22.36), and 200 back (1:56.23). She posted her fastest 200 back time this season and was a bit slower in her two other events. MacNeil leads the team in all three events, with her best in-season 100 back at a 51.10 and 50 free at a 21.90.
She proved unfazed by the back-to-back meets and traveling since she won three gold medals in the 50 fly (24.75), 50 back (25.96), and 100 fly, setting the World Cup and Canadian records at 54.78. MacNeil also earned a silver medal in the 50 free with a time of 23.74. In addition to these events, MacNeil placed fifth in the 100 free (51.82) and second in the heats in the 100 back (56.79).
Curry raced in the 50 free (19.89), 100 free (43.47), and 200 free (1:36.96) for LSU at the dual meet. He won the 100 and 200 but came in a close second to Auburn freshman Kalle Makinen who went 19.82. Leading the team in all three events, Curry set his best in-season time in the 200 free. His best time in the 50 free so far this season is 19.45 and the 100 free is 43.25.
Curry, like his teammate MacNeil, fared well with his circumstances, earning a gold medal in the 200 free (1:42.32), silver in the 50 free (21.07), and bronze in the 100 free (46.32) at the World Cup.
Auburn had four swimmers win multiple individual events against LSU. First, sophomore Nathaniel Stoffle, brother of senior Aidan Stoffle, swam to three victories in the 100 back (47.29), 200 back (1:46.70), and 100 fly (48.96). Stoffle finished with a thrilling tie in the 100 fly with his teammate, freshman Sohib Khaled Emam. Stoffle’s best times this season remain 46.67 for the 100 back, 1:44.12 for the 200 back, and 47.07 for the 100 fly.
Junior Reid Mikuta won the 100 (54.16) and 200 breast (2:01.57). These times are far from Mikuta’s best times this season, with a 51.41 for the 100 breast and 1:54.74 for the 200 breast.
Fifth-year Emily Hetzer and sophomore Mason Mathias took victories in the distance freestyle events. Hetzer won the 500 free (4:50.33) and 1000 free, being the only female swimmer under ten minutes with a time of 9:58.97. Mathias went a 4:26.11 to win the 500 free and a 9:14.40 to finish first in the 1000 free.
Auburn won all of its relays, with the women clocking in a time of 1:39.27 in the 200 medley relay (junior Meghan Lee, sophomore Stasya Makarova, junior Abigail Gibbons, sophomore Lexie Mulvihill) and a 3:21.50 in the 400 free relay (Mulvihill, senior Claudia Thamm, junior Payton Marvin, sophomore Polina Nevmovenko).
The men posted a time of 1:26.54 in the 200 medley relay (Nathaniel Stoffle, Mikuta, Aidan Stoffle, Makinen) and a 2:55.37 in the 400 free relay (fifth-year Christian Sztolcman, Makinen, Aidan Stoffle, junior Ryan Husband).
